Spotlight

Sunday: Jan 19

Spotlight Sunday returns on Jan. 19, when UUCA shines a light on our many Covenant Groups, which offer a safe place to explore spiritual growth and develop deep and meaningful relationships. To encourage full participation and allow participants to really go deep in conversation, groups are just six to ten members. Topics are varied and interesting - spiritual practice, forgiveness, death, aging, humanism, trust, generosity, change, forgiveness, joy, relationship challenges, appreciation, and much more. A major principle of the Covenant Group program is to welcome newcomers from the moment they join the congregation by providing a place  of spiritual nourishment and belonging. Read more at
uuca.org/covenant-groups, email Linda Serra at lindalserra@gmail.com to discuss, and come visit the tables in the Social Hall on Jan. 19!
Weekly Update: Jan 5 - 11

First Friday Singers - Tonight!

First Friday Singers will gather tonight, Jan. 3, at 8 pm in the UUCA Chapel. Folks of all singing and music-reading ability are welcome; typically words to read is all that's needed for each song. Come late or leave early as needed. This is a fun, informal sing along and all are welcome! Feel free to bring a guitar, kazoo, drum, spoons or other instruments. Those who have their own copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. And those that have a favorite song should bring at least 15 copies of the words so the group can try it!

Humanist Fellowship: 2013 Wrap Up - This Sunday

The Humanist Fellowship will take a look back at the year that has passed to find reasons for hope and challenges for 2014. There has been much good interlaced with much bad. The group will look at a perfect case in point: new revelations of outrageous abuses by the NSA, which is fueling a growing international movement to rein in a spying program that some believe has become a threat to world-wide democracy while posing as it's indispensable defender. The fellowship will end on a high note by counting down ten positive developments that give reason for hope in 2014The Humanist Fellowship gathers Sundays from 11:15 am - 12:30 pm, and participants are encouraged to bring a donation for the food barrel.

Underground Theatre Auditions- Jan 6 and 9

The Underground Theatre announces its final show, the beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Harvey by Mary Chase. Starring Bob Winstead, this comedy about a lovable eccentric and his invisible rabbit friend will play Mar. 20-29 in UUCA's cozy downstairs theatre.  Auditions for Harvey will be held from 7-9 pm on Monday, Jan. 6, and Thursday, Jan. 9.  Roles are available for five women and five men in a wide range of ages. Please go to uuca.org/ut for more information about the show and the auditions. And, save the date for a big celebration of director Dante Santacroce and his theatre to be held on Apr. 11.

Wonderful Wednesday - Jan 8

Join UUCAers every Wednesday, now through May 14, for the variety of programs known as Wonderful Wednesday. The centerpiece of each week is a community dinner held at 6:15 pm. Dinners are served by UUCA groups or local non-profits, and proceeds go to UUCA programs and other good causes.  Join us on Jan. 8, when the Villalponda Family hosts with their authentic and yummy Mexican menu. After dinner, stay for Wednesday Night Worship at 7 pm in the Chapel. Interested in catering a Wednesday meal? Available dates for 2014 catering teams are filling fast, so contact Jerolyn Lowry at jlowry@uuca.org for details.
The Sandwich Generation - Jan 9
Trying to balance caring for an elderly parent, your family, your career, yourself? Wondering what you can do for your parents from 1,000 miles away? Come join a conversation on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7 pm in Room 216 at UUCA, where we'll have a chance to vent and problem solve with others in similar situations. For more information, contact Ardene Whittlesey at a_whittlesey@yahoo.com.
Digital Photography for the Family Course - Begins Jan 9
Confused by your digital camera?  Love taking pictures but often disappointed with the results? Roger Easley's intro to digital photography class could be for you!  Adults and teens welcome. Digital photography is a creative hobby that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.  The class will meet for four Thursdays, 7 - 9 pm, starting Jan. 9, to complete before the choir trip to India. Please email Roger at roger_e@mindspring.com. for more information.
Third Thursday Cinema - Jan 16
Sponsored by UUCA's Peace Network, the Third Thursday Cinema happens Jan. 16 at 7 pm in Room 210.  This month's film is Dirty Wars. The War on Terror has fundamentally changed the way the US does war. The traditional rules of engagement no longer apply, and drone strikes, night raids and targeted killings occur across the globe. Those responsible for these acts operate in secret and will never appear before Congress. The film has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for a 2014 Oscar. It is based on Jeremy Scahill's book Dirty Wars: the World is a Battlefield.  Scahill traces the rise of the Joint Special Operations Command, for whom no target is off-limits, including American citizens. A $3 donation is suggested for the evening, which includes refreshments and a moderated discussion.

Dining For Women - Jan 16 and 19

The UUCA chapters of Dining for Women (DFW) will meet Thursday, Jan. 16, and Sunday, Jan. 19. This month's dinners will support the Community Development Program of the Catalyst Foundation, Vietnam. Catalyst's program educates women about human trafficking, provides vocational training to promote self-sufficiency, and protects the women's daughters from trafficking. An invitation is extended to all UUCA women to attend one of the potluck dinners. Contact Mary Crawley for information about the Thursday dinner and Emilu Bailes for the Sunday dinner.

Joetta Prost and Kathy Shell were married on Dec. 28 at the River Road UU Congregation in Bethesda, MD. Their families from Missouri and Virginia, as well as several close friends, joined them in celebrating this wonderful event. They say, "After 18 years together, it is an amazing thing to finally be able to be married. Thanks to President Obama, our marriage will 'count' with the U.S. Government, even while we live in a state that does not yet recognize us as legally married."
