Love Thy Neighbor- Especially When S/He is Hungry

Imagine not knowing if you will have enough food for your next meal. This is food insecurity. Among the children at Hope-Hill Elementary School, food insecurity is a living, breathing factor in daily life. On Nov. 24, UUCA members will pack and deliver 130 boxes of Thanksgiving and other food to families living in Bedford Pine, a low-income community that is home to a large number of children who go to Hope-Hill. There are many ways to help and shoppers are especially needed.  To learn more and sign up to volunteer, visit the Promise The Children blog site!

Channel Your Inner Martha Stewart

Community Conversation with Rev. Makar: The Future Starts Now - This Sunday

On Nov. 17, at 1:30 pm in the Sanctuary, join UUCA's Senior Minister, Rev. Anthony Makar, for "Community Conversation With Rev. Makar: The Future Starts Now" as he discusses the next 10 years at UUCA. How can we make our future more dynamic and creative than ever? Come especially if you'd like to know where things stand with regard to the search for the next staff leader of our programs for children and youth.

Humanist Fellowship: The Prison Industrial Complex - This Sunday

As society changes, so do the modalities for making money and using new-found wealth to buy influence in government policies that promote continued prosperity. Thus did the "cold war" produce policies that funneled massive amounts of tax dollars to military contractors and weapons manufacturers, creating the military industrial complex in the 1950s.  The "war on terror" has provided another pipeline of tax dollars to a "homeland security industrial complex."  And the "war on drugs" has created a way to funnel tax receipts by the billions to corporations that have privatized prison construction and operation. This week the Humanist Fellowship will review the history and morphology of the latter phenomenon, which in a scant two decades has been able to become entrenched as the "prison industrial complex." The Humanist Fellowship gathers Sundays from 11:15 am - 12:30 pm, and participants are encouraged to bring a donation for the food barrel.

The Gift of Adversity - This Sunday

Who has suffered adversity in life? Who hasn't?! Ever considered adversity as a gift? World-renowned psychiatrist, researcher and author Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal will be speaking on his new book, The Gift of Adversity, at UUCA on Nov.17, from 3:30-5 pm. The event is free to the public.  He also writes about techniques to help overcome adversity, one of which is Transcendental Meditation.

Dining For Women - Nov 17 and 21

This month's Dining for Women dinner programs will be held Nov. 17, (contact Emilu Bailes) and Nov. 21, (contact Mary Crawley). Proceeds will benefit Allied Solutions for Sustainable Education and Trust, Inc., (ASSET-Uganda).  ASSET recruits Ugandan women to attend universities by selecting, enrolling and supporting promising young women in completing higher education. DFW's grant will provide 2 years of scholarships to educate 20 young Ugandan women, support Ugandan administrative staff and facilities, and enhance the Bead 2 Read program by providing training and support to artisans. Also see article below about a special December dinner event on Dec. 8.

Men's Fellowship - Nov 19

The Men's Fellowship meets every third Tuesday at UUCA from 7 to 9 pm in room 216, this month on Nov. 19.  This month's topic is readings and discussion on what we are thankful for. Start thinking about what you have to be thankful for at this point in your life and share your thoughts with us.  We probably have more to be thankful for than we realize!  All are welcome. Contact Sven Lovegren at solovegren@yahoo.com for more info.

This week, UUCA's environmental activities and advocacy group, Ens & Outs, will host with their annual pre-Thanksgiving feast!  Come enjoy their menu of home made Thanksgiving favorites for both turkey-eaters and vegetarians alike.  Please be aware that there will be no Wonderful Wednesday Community Dinner on Nov. 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.

Rev. Peter Morales, UUA President, Comes to UUCA - Dec 8

Join us as we welcome to the pulpit Unitarian Universalist Association President Rev. Peter Morales with his sermon, "Love Reaches Out." UU's have a proud history of public witness. Our bright yellow "Standing on the Side of Love" t-shirts are found at demonstrations for social justice. But love doesn't just take a stand. Love reaches out. Can we learn to be as passionate and effective at reaching out as we are about standing for justice?

UUCA is thrilled and honored to have Rev. Morales with us. All members and friends are invited to attend a special reception for Rev. Morales immediately following second service at UUCA.

Rev. Morales, the first Latino president of the UUA, was elected on a platform of growth and multiculturalism. Public witness is central to his presidency; he is especially passionate about immigration reform and environmental justice.

Dining For Women Hosts North Georgia Chapters at UUCA - Dec 8

On Dec. 8, the Roswell and Tucker chapters of Dining for Women (DFW) will host a combined meeting of all North Georgia chapters of DFW. The dinner will be held in the UUCA Social Hall at 5 pm and will benefit Smiles on Wings-Thailand. Smiles on Wings is focused on enabling long term health services by mentoring and educating young Karen refugee women in a remote Thai village. Young women study nursing, early childhood education and other vocations that will benefit the people in their villages. In addition, DFW founder Marsha Wallace will be in attendance to update the participants on the current and future state of the organization. UUCA chapters will present a check to Mrs. Wallace representing a Give Away the Plate donation and funds raised at 2013 Wonderful Wednesday dinners. All UUCA women are invited to attend and participate in this important work for social and economic justice, human rights, and sustainable environments in the developing world. Contact Mary Crawley or Emilu Bailes for info.

Our Caring Community

We offer condolences to the family of Dr. Bill Cherry, a long-time beloved member of our congregation, who passed away on Nov. 6.  The memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 pm in the UUCA sanctuary. Rev. Anthony Makar will officiate.

We offer condolences to Brigitte (Bee) Nahmias and her family.  Her husband, Dr. Donald Norton, died in hospice on Oct. 25, at the age of 95. He devoted his life to music and played his violin until the end. He was a member of UUCA for many years.

Congratulations to Rev. Tessie Mandeville who successfully completed her Unitarian Universalist Association candidacy interview. She is well on her way to becoming fellowshipped as a minister in plural standing with Metropolitan Community Churches and the UUA.
