UUCA-Kroger Project |
The UUCA-Kroger Project contributed significantly to the UUCA budget for the last 29 years. The Project began in 1984 as a vision of Walt and Alicia Hodges, and sales of Kroger gift cards amounted to $60K per year which provided $3K to the UUCA operating budget. Many thanks to all the Project volunteers and those who supported the program by buying gift cards.
Due to changes at Kroger, the gift card program for non-profits ended Aug. 31. It has been replaced by Kroger Community Rewards, which requires individuals to sign up online to connect their Kroger Plus Cards with UUCA's account Visit the "Community" section of kroger.com and have the Kroger Plus Card handy. UUCA's NPO number is 72080 (or find UUCA on the list).
Those needing assistance to sign up should visit the Kroger table in the Social Hall on Sundays between services where the team will have a laptop ready to help. |

Humanist Fellowship: Who Will Own the Internet? - This Sunday
In its scant 30 years of existence the Internet has had a transformative influence on every aspect of everyday life. Since the year 2000 the number of users has swelled from 2% of the world's 7 billion people to nearly 40% today, 80% in the US. In its infancy the Internet was characterized by "Net Neutrality," the principle that there should be no favoritism or discrimination in the allocation of access, download speed, or cost to users. And there was no surveillance. Partly because of the wonkish nature of the subject, most have been oblivious to how far the Internet has strayed from its early, wholly public, non-commercial, net neutral state, and what greater deformations may be in the offing. This week the Humanist Fellowship will attempt to remedy that. The Humanist Fellowship gathers Sundays from 11:15 am - 12:30 pm, and participants are encouraged to bring a donation for the food barrel.

The Glass Menagerie at Underground Theatre - Tickets on Sale Now
Those attending the Underground Theatre's fall production, Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie (Nov. 14-23) should look for a very authentic prop in Act II: a Soldan High School (St. Louis) yearbook. This yearbook hasn't been doctored for the play. It belonged to UUCA member Betsy Rivard's father, who attended Soldan in the late '20s! But there's a lot more than the Soldan yearbook to look forward to in this final fall drama by The Underground Theatre. Come see for yourself! Tickets can be purchased online at uuca.org/ut; by phone at 404-634-5134, xt. 216; or in the Social Hall on Sundays or Wednesdays. Ticket prices range from $10-$16, with several special evenings planned:
- Opening Night Spaghetti Dinner tickets: $7 + cash bar
- Second Thursday Sandwich Cafe tickets: $6 + cash bar
- Friday Childcare: FREE! (if reserved one week prior at uuca.org/childcare)

Our Caring Community
For pastoral care concerns, contact Rev. Jane Thickstun at jthickstun@uuca.org or by phone at 404-634-5134 xt. 215.
We send healing thoughts to Dr. Bill Cherry and his wife, Edith. Dr. Cherry has a lung infection and was recently hospitalized. At this time he is back home at Sunrise Senior Living Center at Five Forks and receiving hospice care. His daughter, Ann, welcomes visits for her parents but please call her first. We offer condolences to our former Associate Minister, Rev. Marti Keller, and her family. Marti's youngest brother, Russell Greenberg, died Oct. 25. Our thoughts go to Rev. Makar's family in Canada. His aunt, Pat Koroluk, passed away Oct. 17 in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 74. Our hearts go out to Emma Antenen and her family. Emma is one of our youth at UUCA. Emma's mother, Amy Jo Antenen, died unexpectedly and tragically in a car accident on Oct. 22. Condolence cards are welcomed; please contact Rev. Tessie Mandeville for the family's address.
Our hearts also go out to the family of longtime UUCA member Joyce Durand, who died Oct. 26 at Hospice Atlanta. Her husband, Gregg Reinhardt, writes, "She was a young divorcee at a time when single moms were not well regarded in the traditional churches of her youth. UUCA became a second home to her where she and her two daughters, Lori and Tonia, found friendship and family. She may be best known as a friend to many. A person that naturally attracted other people and brought them together." The memorial service will be Nov. 3, at 2 pm in the UUCA Sanctuary.
