Increased Monitoring at Breach Inlet
Beach3
The City hires experts to conduct annual monitoring of the City's entire seven-mile beach.  Recently, City Council voted to increase to quarterly monitoring at Breach Inlet.  The erosion at Breach Inlet is expected to heal naturally over time, but the City intends to keep a close eye on the area.
Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Act
City Council passed a resolution at its October meeting urging the federal government to slow down the implementation of the Biggert-Waters Act regarding flood insurance reform.  Homeowners may experience a fiscal impact.  Click here to watch a video explaining the act.

Time Change. Check your Smoke Alarm and Lock Doors!
Fire Department Sign
This weekend it is "time" to change clocks back one hour on Saturday night.  The Isle of Palms Fire Department reminds residents to check the batteries in smoke alarms at the same time.  The Police Department reminds us to lock the doors to our cars and homes near the holidays.  Stay safe and enjoy!

SCE&G Erecting Pole for Better Service

South Carolina Electric and Gas is erecting a pole on a lot owned by the City at 1301 Palm Boulevard.  The pole will connect to an under-marsh line to improve reliability in electric service to the island.  This will allow SCE&G to provide better service with fewer and shorter interruptions in the case of disaster or damage to the main power line.
Be Careful of Infected Dolphins

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared an Unusual Mortality Event for dolphins due to recent deaths in the Mid-Atlantic region.  This sad news means we must use extra caution if a dolphin is found, dead or alive, on IOP beaches.
Do not approach or touch a dolphin.  Report any marine strandings by calling 9-1-1.
COWs Visit IOP

COWs are on the island!  Not "moo" cows but Cell On Wheels.  They have been installed in the large municipal parking lot on Pavilion Drive to facilitate the Isle of Palms Water and Sewer Commission goal of refurbishing the water tower.  The COWs will help cellular service during the project.  The project is expected to be complete and the COWs removed before the start of the next beach season.
