President's Message By: Lyo Figueroa, HBA President
Spring has arrived and has brought with it this wonderful weather for all of us to enjoy. Our spring Happy Hour was a great time and we were able to engage and spend a very enjoyable night with our fellow HBA members in the beautiful city of Costa Mesa.
As we enjoy the warmer weather we also get to celebrate great news and become a part of history as Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced that our currency will now include women and civil right leaders. This historic change will depict the first women to ever be on U.S. currency and will add the faces of great historical figures. Our new U.S. currency will now include Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Alice Paul, Sojourner Truth, Marian Anderson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. These amazing historical figures who fought tirelessly for freedom, equality and fairness will now be part of our everyday lives. The HBA has always focused on education and raising the next generation of HBA leaders and Latino lawyers and thus we are delighted to see this much deserved recognition.
As the HBA continues to focus on education and giving back to our community we invite you all to join us on April 30, 2016 for a Citizenship Fair. Please come support legal permanent residents who are in search of reaching the American dream by becoming citizens of this great country. Attorney volunteers are needed along with bilingual individuals to serve as interpreters, the more the merrier!
In following with our HBA tradition, we will hold our Annual 5 De Mayo De Barranda on the actual day this year. Join us May 5, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. at Who Song & Larry's Cal Mex Cantina in Orange as we celebrate together, meet and network while enjoying drinks and appetizers.
I cannot close this newsletter without mentioning the UC Irvine School of Law 2016 Public Service Award Dinner where Ambassador Carlos R. Moreno, distinguished jurist, advocate and public servant will be honored for his lifelong career in public service. The HBA is immensely proud and looks to individuals like Ambassador Moreno who have paved the way and encourage us all to strive for greatness.
This newsletter is filled with reasons to celebrate and we hope you will join us at our 5 De Mayo De Barranda, buy your tickets now as this is one of our big events of the year and we want you all to be a part of it!
-Lyo
