February 2015

President's Message

By: Rafael G. Nendel-Flores, HBA President

As we head towards the end of February, I am reminded of how fast time goes by.  It feels like just yesterday I was helping my two girls Lorelei and Anneliese open up their Christmas presents.  Now, the OCHBA is in the very final stages of planning its 37th Annual Scholarship and Installation Dinner ("Annual Dinner") which will take place on March 7, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County and my older daughter Lorelei is having her "Frozen" themed birthday party at an ice staking rink on March 15, 2015.  As the learned philosopher Ferris Bueller once said: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Speaking of the OCHBA's Annual Dinner, if you have not already made plans to attend, it's not too late!  You can purchase tickets on this website or you can contact me at rafael.nendel-flores@odnss.com and we'll take care of you.  The Annual Dinner is a showcase for how far the Hispanic legal community has come and how unlimited our potential is.

I also continue to be impressed with the success of our OCHBA members.  For example, Javier F. Gutierrez was recently elected partner with his firm Stuart Kane LLP (see more in the In the News section below).  Given that Hispanics constitute less than 4% of the California Bar even though we compromise more than 40% of California's population, being elevated to partner at a prominent Southern California law firm is an impressive feat indeed.  Javier is a shining example of what we are all capable of.  Congratulations Javier!

Finally, in thinking about my two daughters and the wonderful role model that their mother has been for them, I also wanted to say a special "Thank You" to the amazing women in the OCHBA whose contributions to this organization are immeasurable.  A few examples include our immediate past President Diana Lopez, our current Secretary Maria Cobarrubias, the head for our Mentorship Committee Steffi Gascon Hafen, the co-chair for Trip Committee Yolanda Victoria Torres, the chair of our the Bylaws Committee Erica M. Diaz, and our Administrator Amelia Montgomery who does so much work for us behind the scenes.  If one needed to find powerful female role models, they need look no further than the OCHBA.

God Bless and I hope to all of you at our Annual Dinner!
