President's Message
By: Mayte Santacruz, 2013 HBA President
My year as HBA President has come to an end, and I cannot thank you enough for your incredible support this year. It truly has been an honor to be President of this great organization because, among other things, it has given me the opportunity to meet and work with many of you. Thanks to our collective effort, the HBA has been able to accomplish many great things this year, including the following:
- Raised almost $140,000 at the HBA Annual Dinner in March.
- Provided CLE opportunities for 70+ judges and attorneys who attended the sold out annual trip to Costa Rica in May.
- Created partnerships with local organizations, including Los Amigos of Orange County and OC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, among others.
- Awarded over $15,000 in scholarships to Latino law students through the Wally Davis Scholarship program earlier this year, and will award $40,000 in scholarships to Latino law students at the end of this year.
- Created a scholarship program for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applicants; the HBA will award three stipends to DACA applicants to cover the $465 filing fee and will pair the recipients with HBA attorneys who will assist, on a pro bono basis, in the completion and filing of the application.
We would not have been able to accomplish any of this without your invaluable support and the generosity of our many sponsors, and for that, we want to thank you very much! We hope that you continue supporting the HBA and our amazing incoming president Diana Lopez next year.
Personally, I want to thank this year's Board members for their friendship, support and hard work. Without their time, energy and commitment to this organization, I would not have been able to accomplish much as President and this organization wouldn't be the vibrant and re-energized organization it is today. Gracias por todo!
Feliz Navidad y Prospero Aņo Nuevo desde Argentina!
~ Mayte
