President's Message

By: Mayte Santacruz, 2013 HBA President

Happy belated Cinco de Mayo!  Many thanks to all that joined us at our annual 5 de Mayo de Barranda on May 2nd to celebrate Mexico's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  Special thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Advanced Depositions/Discovery, Ogletree Deakins, Gordon Rees, and Rimon PC, for making this a successful event.  We have the event pictures posted on our website, so please feel free to peruse them.

We also want to thank those who attended the HBA/Public Law Center's Naturalization Clinic on April 13th and the Orange County AIDS Walk on May 4th.  Thank you for your continued support of the HBA and the Public Law Center.  Thank you also to HBA board members Guillermo Tello, Ivan Cisneros, Eric Dominguez, and Joaquin Nava for participating at MABA's 5th Annual Softball Tournament last Saturday, May 4th.  For the first time in four years, the HBA's went to the playoffs this year and proudly earned 3rd place.  Congratulations HBA's!

Our next event, the annual travel seminar, is less than two weeks away, and those of us attending couldn't be more excited!  On the 23rd of this month, more than 70 HBA members, including their families and friends, will be boarding a plane to Quepos, Costa Rica for our Memorial Day Weekend MCLE trip.  Not only are we sold out, but have set a record for attendance for Costa Rica!  We look forward to sharing pictures of our travels in next month's Newsletter.

Feliz Dia de las Madres!

OCHBA Participates in the Annual Mexican American Bar Association Softball Tournament
On Saturday, the OCHBA participated in the annual Mexican American Bar Association Softball Tournament.  The "HBA's" was one of thirteen teams, which included teams from other bar organizations, law firms, the public defender's office, and a team of Los Angeles County Judges.  This was the fourth year the HBA's participated and while the HBA's have always fielded competitive teams, this year's team was the most talented yet.  The HBA's finished their first round undefeated with a record of 3-0 and a run differential of +19, surpassing their 2-1 record in the previous three years.  This propelled the HBA's into the semi-finals game where the HBA's unfortunately ran out of time (literally, the 1 hour limit was called) and the HBA's suffered a heart-breaking one run loss.  However, the HBA's proudly earned 3rd Place and will be receiving a plaque from MABA for this accomplishment.  The HBA's thank all of their supporters, with special thanks to Advance Discovery, the official team sponsor.  Thanks to Advance Discovery's sponsorship, this year the HBA's had special jerseys and caps displaying the HBA's team name.  Although the tournament just passed, the HBA's can't wait to suit up and compete again next year.

Snell & Wilmer Pre-Law Program & FAR
In 2009, Snell & Wilmer established the "Snell & Wilmer Pre-Law Program" to serve self-identified diverse undergraduate students. The hallmark of the Program was the LSAT Scholarship, which provided selected candidates with a monetary stipend covering the costs of taking and preparing for the law school admission test.  Since its introduction, the firm has awarded more than a dozen LSAT Scholarships to aspiring lawyers of diverse backgrounds across the country.
Understanding the subtle complexities of the challenges faced by diverse candidates, Snell & Wilmer recently expanded the Pre-Law Program and LSAT Scholarship to the Fellowship for Advancement and Resources ("FAR").  FAR provides selected fellows with all of the resources provided under the LSAT Scholarship, plus (1) an audio course to prepare the student for law school; (2) a monetary stipend; (3) reimbursement for books; and (4) a Snell & Wilmer attorney to mentor the fellow.  We are looking forward to naming our first FAR Fellows later this summer.
The deadline for applications is July 1, 2013.  For the application and more information about FAR, please visit: http://www.swlaw.com/the-firm/diversity/go-far
