November 2012

Jose GonzalezPresident's Message

By: José González

November is here, and it reminds me that I'm in the homestretch of my presidency.  As the saying goes, "Out with the old, in with the new."  The candidates running for an HBA position as an officer or director in 2013 worked hard at the HBA's annual Dia De Los Muertos mixer to campaign for votes from the attendees.  Thank you to all of you who attended the mixer, and a special thanks to our event sponsor Union Bank.

I encourage those of you who have not become a member of the HBA to do so now to take advantage of receiving membership privileges of voting for the next slate of officers and directors of the HBA in this year's election that ends next Tuesday, November 13th.  With your new or renewed membership you will not only be able to help shape the future of the HBA but you will also enjoy member discounts for our remaining events this year and our future events for all of 2013.

The HBA election results will be announced at the Annual Member Meeting and Holiday Party on December 6th at the Green Parrot Villa in Santa Ana.  Please mark this on your calendar and plan on joining us as we celebrate another successful year for the HBA and usher in the next generation of HBA leaders.

2012-2013 Wally Davis Scholarship Application Deadline Extended to November 16!

Did you know that Latinos constitute almost 50% of California's population, yet less than 4% of California's attorneys are Latino? To bridge this gap, the HBA Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Installation Dinner raises funds for the Wallace (Wally) R. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Orange County Latino students who are presently attending law school and who have demonstrated involvement in the Latino Community. The Scholarship Fund was named in honor of Wallace (Wally) R. Davis, one of the first Hispanic attorneys in Orange County. He rose to the highest ranks in the legal profession, co-founding the HBA and championing the struggles of the Latino community. By assisting young Latino law students, this scholarship is awarded to those who would follow in his footsteps.

Applications will be reviewed by the HBA Scholarship Committee. Please note the following dates:
November 16, 2012: Application deadline. All materials must be postmarked by this date.
December 17, 2012: Notification of scholarship awards will be mailed by this date.
