There's a lot happening at Reno-Tahoe International Airport this spring.

American Airlines just added 500 more airline seats per day to major hub airports like Chicago, Dallas and LAX. Atlantic Aviation just opened a spectacular new building for general aviation and business aircraft that will make a powerful impression on the private aircraft side of the field. We have a new firefighting aircraft on the field and bowlers are rolling through the terminal bringing economic impact to the region.

As spring leads into summer, we are hoping to announce even more new business. You can help give a lift to the airport and the community by flying on your next trip for business or pleasure. Enjoy the newsletter and we hope to see you soon at the airport.

If you have any questions or comments, I welcome your input and suggestions at mmora@renoairport.com.

Sincerely,

Marily M. Mora, A.A.E.

Preparing for a Day We Hope Never Comes...Triennial Disaster Drill

Every three years, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires Reno-Tahoe International Airport to hold a full scale disaster drill. This year the emergency training exercise will take place on Thursday, May 29. Broken Wing will feature a simulated crash of a Boeing 737 jet on airport property. The event is not open to the public, but it is important for the public to know about the training.

Emergency Vehicles

Reno-Tahoe International and Reno-Stead airports are Northern Nevada's most important emergency assets. If a disaster strikes our community, the best way for food, supplies and medicine to come to our community will be through our airports. That's why practicing for a disaster is so important. We have a tremendous responsibility to be prepared to keep the airport operating under any circumstances.

The crash site will be staged on the southwest quadrant of the airport. It will involve numerous police and fire responders as well as volunteers playing the role of crash victims, family members and the media. Victims will be moulaged to simulate injuries and emergency personnel will practice actual evacuations and triage.

Emergency Responders

The exercise will serve as a test of the Airport's Mobile Command Vehicle and Emergency Operations Center, Activation of the Family Assistance Program, Media Coordination and a test of the 800 megahertz radio system. This training has been developed with the close cooperation of all agencies that would be involved in an actual aircraft disaster.

Coming together as a community is truly the best way we can prepare for any emergency. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is committed to providing safety and security at one the region's most important community resources.

In the Air at Reno-Stead Airport

Reno-Stead, the Airport Authority's 5,000-acre general aviation gem to the north, is primed for growth. The Airport Authority recently issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for development at the Reno-Stead Airport, home to 200 based aircraft, a National Guard base, BLM firefighting base, the famous National Championship Reno Air Races, and now a new Terminal Building.

Stead Terminal
Potential development partners with expertise in large and small scale industrial developments were invited to submit qualifications for roughly 3,500 acres of aeronautical and non-aeronautical land. And with Reno- Stead Airport being designated a Federal Aviation Administration test site for unmanned aerial systems (UAS), the RFQ comes at a key time to attract interest in land at an airport that is one of six FAA test sites for UAS in the entire nation.

In addition, the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NIAS) recently opened a Program Management Office (PMO) at Reno-Stead Airport, led by retired Lt. Col. Warren Rapp, which will bolster the UAS development. The global UAS industry is forecasted to grow into a $90 billion business by 2023, and current efforts by the NIAS PMO and the State of Nevada are expected to bring a huge economic benefit to the region.

From general aviation to Unmanned Aerial Systems technology and 3,500 acres of land ready for development, Reno-Stead Airport is ready for take-off.

Economic Impact Rolls into Town with USBC Bowling

The United States Bowling Congress, Men's and Women's Open Championships are both well underway, with an estimated 160,000 people rolling in to the region for the popular tournaments.

Together, the two bowling tournaments bring an estimated $183 million in economic impact to the region, and 75% of the competitors will fly into Reno-Tahoe International to compete. The teams, along with family and friends, will be arriving from all 50 states and several foreign countries. To welcome them, banners, signs and electronic messages are in the terminal and decorative bowling pins line the bag belts.

USBC

Typically, the bowlers travel as a team, in groups of five, and are here for 3 to 4 days of tournament before another group rotates in to play. On average, the competitors can be expected to travel with two to three bowling balls each, weighing an average of 14 - 16 pounds. In addition, bowlers use certain types of chemicals to clean their equipment that often trigger alarms when run through security detection equipment, therefore requiring each bowling bag to be screened by hand.

The airport is ready to handle the impact of these important returning visitors. While we can't ensure every ball bowled is a strike, Reno-Tahoe International Airport will spare no effort to bowl over the customers with exceptional customer service!

Atlantic Aviation's Beautiful General Aviation Facility Now Open

Atlantic Aviation, the largest Fixed Based Operator (FBO) in the U.S., opened its new $7 million expanded facility on April 8th at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

 Atlantic Hangar

The two-story, 13,000 sq. ft. terminal and 29,800 sq. ft. attached aircraft hangar make a beautiful new addition to the airfield that serves general aviation pilots who fly in on small, single-engine private aircraft to large, high-speed corporate jets.

The expansion and remodel features an Internet café in the pilots lounge and private data rooms for passengers, two conference rooms with audio visual capability, a customer coffee bar and Wi-Fi access throughout the terminal. The facility incorporates the look and feel of Tahoe with the use of natural stone, tile and wood throughout its finishes.

Atlantic Terminal

"Atlantic Aviation investing in our airport and community demonstrates that general aviation has a bright future at Reno-Tahoe International," Marily Mora, President/CEO of Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, said.

Atlantic's facility at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport offers services such as fueling, aircraft storage, and de-icing as well as concierge services including catering and ground transportation for aircraft owners and pilots.

A subsidiary of the Macquarie Infrastructure Company, Atlantic is headquartered in Plano, TX and is the largest provider of FBOs for the general aviation community with a network of 66 FBOs throughout the United States.

New Firefighting Tool Lands at RNO:

Less than a week after opening the doors on it's new terminal, Atlantic welcomed a tenant that will bring jobs, landed weight and safety to the region. The Coulson Group is a firefighting business that flies C-130 aircraft that will help protect the area from wildfires. They are starting their operation at RTIA with one C-130 and may expand with more.

Airport Salutes Honor Flight Veterans

Honor Flight is a nationwide program that transports America's veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials that were built in honor of their service and sacrifice. During its fourth trip from northern Nevada, Honor Flight will send thirty local veterans from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars on a weekend tour of the nation's capital.

Honor Flight

Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority is working closely with Southwest Airlines, the TSA, Honor Flight organizers and local military support groups to plan a special send-off and welcome home. On Sunday, April 27 at 3:50 p.m. our veterans will return to the region to a warm community-wide homecoming. Civil Air Patrol cadets will escort them from the gate to Baggage Claim, led by a Bag Piper from the Nevada Guard, and the Paws4Passengers therapy dogs who will wag their tails in welcoming home the veterans.

The public is invited to join us in this special celebration as we honor our local veterans.
