How do you think Santa travels the globe in just one night? He must be following these travel tips that help make for smooth travel:
- Arrive 90 minutes prior to your scheduled departure, or two hours before international flights.
- Call the airline or log on to their website prior to departure to check flight status. Remember that weather across the nation can impact flights.
- Be an educated traveler and know the baggage fees: log on to your airline's website to learn how much each bag may cost to check. All airlines at RTIA, except Southwest, charge between $20 and $25 for the first checked bag.
- At the Security Checkpoint, empty your pockets, remove your shoes and jewelry, and place them in the bins provided. Remember to retrieve all your items once through screening.
- Wear comfortable clothing, and be prepared to remove coats, jackets and all outer wear; place them in the bin for screening.
- Be sure to know the TSA 3-1-1 rule for carry-on bags at www.tsa.gov. Liquids, gels and aerosols such as shampoo, lotion and perfume must be packed in a one quart plastic baggie; one baggie per customer. Remember that large snow globes fall into this category of unacceptable items.
- To save time, download boarding passes at home. If checking luggage, remember to allow enough time at the airport to check your bags.
- Save time exiting the parking garage with the Pay on Foot machines. Located at the pedestrian entrance to the garage, the Pay on Foot machines allow customers to pay credit, debit card or cash. A prepaid ticket receipt will be printed and upon exiting in your vehicle, simply insert your prepaid ticket in to the exit machine and avoid the lines.
- The holidays are a time when many young children fly unaccompanied to their destination. If sending off a departing unaccompanied minor or a senior traveler, talk to airline ticket counter personnel if you wish to accompany the passenger to the gate. Proper identification will be required to drop off and pick up the child.
- Do not wrap gifts. Wait until you reach your destination to wrap holiday gifts because it is possible the TSA may need to unwrap the gift for inspection.

Greetings!
 |
Marily M. Mora, President & CEO |
I am proud to announce a New Approach to the way the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority does business. The New Approach is the name of the airport's Strategic Plan that was unveiled to our community Dec. 3. It is the culmination of months of hard work by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board of Trustees. It provides a compass for our staff as we move forward into a changing time in the aviation industry. Adam Mayberry, the Chairman of the Board, describes the Strategic Plan below and we have included a link to the plan as well. As a new CEO who has been on the job for five months, I look forward to taking a New Approach to leading the airport into the future.
If you are looking to get into the holiday spirit, stop by the airport and watch the arrivals area. It's the most heart warming spot in the airport and the true meaning of the holidays is on display. It's the place where hugs and kisses abound. Airports, and the holidays, are about bringing people together and the arrivals area is where the community comes home for the holidays.
On behalf of the board and staff of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, happy holidays and we hope to see you soon at the airport.
If you have any questions or comments, I welcome your input and suggestions at mmora@renoairport.com. Sincerely, Marily M. Mora, A.A.E. President and CEO |
A New Approach: Airport's Strategic Plan

Adam Mayberry, Board Chairman
|
It is an honor for me to serve as this year's Chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA), the owner and operator of the Reno-Tahoe International and Reno-Stead Airports. I serve alongside eight dynamic and diverse professionals skilled in the fields of aviation, business, tourism, gaming, transportation, and even medicine. The Trustees of the RTAA are appointed individually by our local elected leaders from Sparks, Reno, Washoe County, and the Board of the RSCVA.
The RTAA, according to its enabling legislation established in 1978, is considered a quasi-municipal organization. We are bound by many of the governing requirements our local governments must follow. And we are committed now, more than ever, to governing through a transparent and open manner. After all, our airports belong to our community.
I am proud of our newly hired President/CEO Marily Mora and her high performing team who are underway in implementing a new strategic plan that the Trustees created and adopted in June. This plan will enable our airports to reach a higher altitude in years to come.
The plan outlines five priorities:
Increasing air service
Having a vibrant and efficient airport with a wide array of flights and easy access to key destinations across the globe is paramount, particularly as our community leaders work to attract economic development to our region. Our airports play a critical role in supporting our economic growth and recovery.
Optimizing General Aviation (GA) and Services, which includes all aviation operations other than scheduled commercial service is a priority. These operations include private pilots, small business owners, and even emergency services such as air ambulances. GA is a key contributor to regional economic growth and development and must be embraced as an integral component of the airport system and its ability to thrive.
Expanding air cargo service
is key to business development which will promote connectivity and create new opportunities by supporting and expanding our region's distribution, warehouse, and light manufacturing industries. It is clear that new air cargo facilities at Reno-Tahoe International will be required soon.
We will also play a role in facilitating Economic Development at both airports. By generating more business (aviation and non-aviation), we support our economy. Added business at our airports equates to more revenue to the RTAA which enables us to keep our costs down, thereby attracting new air service. There is truly a "domino effect" throughout our community when our airports prosper. Stead's vast open space of nearly 5,000 acres is being considered as a test site for unmanned aircraft. This is an example of the tremendous economic potential our airports can bring to our community.
Finally, we are committed to providing a positive environment and experience for all. Not only does this consist of a highly skilled and productive work force, but it also includes ensuring we are providing quality customer service. The airport must make the ultimate first and last impression on business travelers and families who travel to our region, which is why we have made great strides recently in service and improvements at our airport.
To read the Strategic Plan in its entirety, visit the airport website Latest News section at www.renoairport.com, and give us your feedback. Thanks for flying with us.
