Enjoy safe holiday travels with these helpful tips

Santa Claus had Rudolph to guide him through his holiday travels, and at Reno-Tahoe International we have holiday travel tips to help you happily and safely reach your destination this year.

There's good news for seniors over 75 years of age traveling through Reno-Tahoe International. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has relaxed the security checkpoint experience and no longer requires them to remove their shoes.

* Arrive 90 minutes prior to your scheduled departure, or two hours before international flights.

* For specific flight information, contact the airline. During periods of inclement weather, call the airline or log on to their website prior to departure to ensure that the flight is on time.

* Be an educated traveler and know the baggage fees: log on to your airline's website to learn how much each bag may cost to check. All airlines at RTIA, except Southwest, charge between $20 and $25 for the first checked bag.

* At the Security Checkpoint, empty your pockets, remove your shoes (Unless you are a senior citizen) and jewelry, and place them in the bins provided. Remember to retrieve all your items once through screening.

* Wear comfortable clothing, and be prepared to remove coats, jackets and all outer wear; place them in the bin for screening.

* But be sure to know the TSA 3-1-1 rule for carry-on bags at www.tsa.gov. Liquids, gels and aerosols such as shampoo, lotion and perfume must be packed in a one quart plastic baggie; one baggie per customer. A new rule allows snow globes to be exempt from the liquid 3-1-1 regulations.

* To save time, download boarding passes at home. If checking luggage, remember to allow enough time at the airport to check your bags. Cut-off times vary by airline.

* The holidays are a time when many young children fly unaccompanied to their destination. If sending off a departing unaccompanied minor or a senior traveler, talk to airline ticket counter personnel if you wish to accompany the passenger to the gate. Proper identification will be required to drop off and pick up the child.

* Do not wrap gifts. Wait until you reach your destination to wrap holiday gifts because it is possible the TSA may need to unwrap the gift for inspection.

* Pack your patience and log on to www.renoairport.com for a list of airlines and their contact information.

The Gateway construction project is bringing magical improvements to the airport

While the airport is experiencing construction, holiday travelers will not be impacted by the Gateway Project.

The $27 million project that is bringing a new centralized security checkpoint, stores and restaurants is well on its way to completion with an opening expected this spring. Airport staff, and the contractor Q&D Construction, have left plenty of room and placed extensive signage to help guide passengers through the airport during the project.

The Gateway Project at Reno-Tahoe International Airport will extend a Lake Tahoe theme throughout the first floor of the terminal while creating a single security checkpoint and dramatically improving the restaurants and stores.

Baggage Claim

Gateway is a 17-month program that will create a new front door to the community and ensure a positive new first and last impression on 4 million passengers each year.  It is supported by $7 million in private investment, along with airport revenues, federal funds and user fees.  During these tough economic times, the Gateway project is helping to employ 275 local construction workers and putting food on tables this holiday season.

Greetings!

   Krys Bart - small

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is proud to help the holiday spirit take flight in our community. Our runways provide a worldwide connection to bring you, or your family and friends, home for the holidays.

We bring the gift of amazing travel connections to our region 24/7, 365 days per year. At RNO, we also help send and receive your gifts. Thanks to on-line shopping, and the proximity of our airport to numerous distribution centers, our 14 cargo flights per day in December are filled with holiday gifts starting and ending their journey at Reno-Tahoe International.

But the connections we provide are more than passenger and cargo flights. Reno-Tahoe International makes connections real. In a world of tweets, posts and skype, we are the one location in our community where the kiss good-bye and first hug home still have great meaning.

At this special time of year, incredible moments take place in our terminal with each airline flight. It is heartwarming to see families reconnect after being separated by miles, and sometimes years. But the entire airport family is especially proud to play a role in bringing servicemen and women home for the holidays. We have established a welcome center this season near baggage claim where the Blue Star Moms provide a heartfelt greeting for every man and woman in uniform.

Our local schools and performing groups will have carolers, bands and dancers in the airport adding holiday spirit for our travelers. But the holiday greetings would not be complete without Santa greeting children with candy, and traveling canines with dog bones, and a hearty "Ho, Ho, Ho".

On behalf of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board and staff, we wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. And in the New Year, we look forward to helping you fly and connect for business, family or fun.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Sincerely,

New Flights on Board

for 2013

The New Year is taking off to a good start with two new flights being added to the schedule at Reno-Tahoe International.

Allegiant Air will begin non-stop service between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and Las Vegas McCarran International Airport starting February 1, 2013. And Southwest Airlines will begin daily non-stop seasonal service to Ontario, CA starting Jan. 6 and running through March 8.

 Allegiant

Allegiant's twice weekly service will add a new option to Las Vegas and meet the needs of both leisure and business travelers alike. Southwest Airlines currently offers ten daily departures from Reno.

Allegiant will operate an MD-80 aircraft with 166 passenger seats on Fridays and Sundays. The flight will depart from Vegas at 1:30 p.m. and arrive in Reno at 2:50 p.m. It will depart Reno at 3:30 p.m. and land in Vegas at 4:45 p.m.

 Southwest

The new Ontario service will feature a 137-seat Boeing 737 and will enhance Reno's connections to the L.A. Basin. In addition, the flight offers travelers another option for getting to the Palm Springs area. For winter sports enthusiasts in the Southern California area, this new flight is just in time for the ski season.

The flight will leave Ontario at 8:00 a.m. and arrive in Reno-Tahoe at 9:20 a.m., Sunday through Friday. The return flight will leave Reno-Tahoe at 12:55 p.m. and arrive in Ontario at 2:10 p.m. On Saturdays, the schedule will operate with a 10:55 a.m. departure from Ontario and a 12:15 p.m. Reno arrival. The outbound flight will depart Reno at 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays with a 12:20 p.m. arrival in Ontario.

'Tis the season for holiday music in the airport

Swope Middle School Jazz Band performed music in the main lobby on December 14 to get holiday travelers in to the groove.

The Swope Jazz Ensemble was one of many performances this season to brighten up the travel experience for the thousands of passengers flying through Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Swope students also created the decorative Gingerbread Houses on display in the terminal.

The Airport Authority has been a proud Partner in Education with Swope Middle School since 1993 and the partnership includes a number of activities year-round that are both educational and fun.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport receives no state or local tax dollars.
All operating revenues are generated from tenant and concession fees.
