February 2015 Newsletter

Dear friends,

As I sit at my computer contemplating what's to come, I can feel my intuition kicking in telling me this will be a banner year for many of us. We can proudly name the hurdles we have jumped over this past year; we can joyfully reflect on the new habits we have adopted; all of them great preparation for the coming year and any challenges it might bring.

When I write the lists of what I have overcome and what I have adopted, I can see clearly many accomplishments to be proud of. And because of that, I can more easily face the ones I have yet to master. I challenge you to make your own list as an empowering way to begin the new year of 2015.

A few things I'd like to share with you: I am coming around the bend on completing my book on The Innovator Brain Type and hope to complete the publishing process this year. I will keep you posted about the groundbreaking nature of this new understanding of ADHD born from my four decades of experience and research.

I look forward to another great year of growth and fun with all of you! Remember that you will always be an important ingredient in my own growth and happiness.

My very best wishes,

Carol

An Up-t0-Date Examination of ADHD

Constantly shifting between multiple name changes and symptom d
efinitions, the psychiatric field has never handled ADD/ADHD adequately or fairly. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-5), 5th edition, of the American Psychiatric Association, defines ADHD as: a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by impairing levels of inattention, disorganization, and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Inattention and disorganization entail inability to stay on task, seeming not to listen, and losing materials at levels that are inconsistent with age or developmental level. Hyperactivity-impulsivity entails over-activity, fidgeting, inability to stay seated, intruding into other people's activities, and inability to wait - symptoms that are excessive for age or developmental level.

Compare the description above to the many innovators, past and present, who have changed history through their larger-than-life contributions. There are many of them, but how about just Henry Ford and the Wright Brothers. Does the description above even seem relevant? There will always be different ways of doing things and different brain types needed to do them. We need to work together so we all rise to the top!

In my opinion, the definition from the American Psychiatric Association has always focused too much on the behavioral side effects of ADD/ADHD as a disability or disorder, rather than looking at it's fascinating cause: a brain with faster processing speeds, capacity to think out of the box and invent creative solutions, and a startling capacity for compassion. The profession of psychiatry has, in my opinion, been guilty of pathologizing an entire segment of the population and would do well to reflect on the outcome of their assumptions and practices.

Is ADHD really a disability and a disorder? When creative, capable and innovative people are treated like they have a disorder, their tendency can be to try less to achieve and not better themselves. When "rapid-fire" brain people with above average abilities are told they have a disability, aren't they more likely to feel less capable than their peers? Often accepting this fate becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy for them. Most of the adults I have coached through the years had fallen into patterns that fell short of their most desired expectations, hopes and dreams.

Isn't there a better way?

I had the extraordinary pleasure of working with Carol when I made the decision to stop taking medication and start understanding how I could live a fuller life with ADD. Carol, an ADHD coaching pioneer in the Boston area, was simply brilliant... Together we mapped out a success strategy, using my personal value system to leverage the goals I wanted to attain.

What I enjoyed most was the weekly assignments we tailored to fit my goals. These exercises required open reflection and internalization of my individual belief systems thus leading to greater business productivity, richer relations, superior focus and bolstered self-esteem.

Carol's coaching techniques have given me the intellectual tools I needed to prioritize my life... I recurrently reflect on Carol's unwavering support of my personal journey... I am very blessed to have her in my life and will be forever grateful.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with our Young Professionals Group... Your presentation was interesting and enlightening. You did a great job tailoring your presentation to the audience and kept the discussion light and open which worked well as the group was genuinely engaged. The attendees gained knowledge of the importance of a business coach and what it means to work with innovators in their own workplaces.
