Devotion
The Robe of Righteousness
John 11:25 - Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."

Towards the end of February, my Grandfather passed away at the age of 95.  I was very grateful for the opportunity to gather with many family members in Great Falls, MT, to remember and celebrate his life. One of the most special and moving moments of our weekend came during the presentation of the American flag to my grandmother by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.  I was struck by the words spoken by the Honor Guard airman as he handed the flag to my grandmother: "On behalf of the President of the United States, the Department of the Air Force, and a grateful nation, we offer this flag for the faithful and dedicated service of Major Donald Stuart Smith."  This airman was acting by the command of and in the stead of our President, sending a message of thanksgiving and consolation from the President's own voice.

My grandfather was a man of many abilities and talents. He had an accomplished military career, piloting B-24 and F-84 bombers.  He became what is known in the air force as a "triple threat" (bombardier, pilot, and navigator).  He built two homes by hand, worked for the US Weather Bureau, had a degree in accounting, flew as a charter pilot and also flew for the US Forest Service as a "spotter."  He was an accomplished outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish.  He was also a talented oil painter and a great pianist. I have many happy memories of flying, fishing, camping, and playing cards with him.

In spite of all these skills and accomplishments, my grandfather was a sinner.  No matter how hard he worked (and he was a hard worker), he could not on his own reconcile his sin to God Almighty.  But he was also a man of faith.  When he died he was presented not with a country flag, but with the very robe of righteousness won on the cross by Jesus Christ.  Maybe he heard the words "On behalf of God the Father, I, Jesus, offer this robe for the justification and salvation of Believer Donald Stuart Smith."  Indeed, When God looked upon him, he did not see a sinner condemned, but one who had put on Christ's righteousness.

This robe is presented to all who die in faith.  When our time on earth has ended we will also accept our robes and enter into our heavenly home.  Until that time, may we serve God faithfully, and strive to live a life that worthy of that gift.

SCHEDULING FOR THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR
Returning students took time this week to choose classes for next year, and should be bringing home a re-registration form. Mrs. Mueller is available to meet with students and families to help in the process of course selection, or to answer any questions regarding academic plans and the honors diploma. Please contact Mrs. Mueller for an appointment time.

This form is due by April 1 in order to waive the $100 registration fee. Association members must have their pastors sign to confirm membership in an association church in order to receive association tuition rates.  The $100 re-registration fee will be completely waived if the fully completed and signed document is postmarked by April 1st.  Completing the paper work on time not only saves you money, it also holds a spot for your child at Valley Lutheran High School as we open registration to transfer students after April 1st.

You will learn:
  • the importance of incorporating a threefold approach to college planning: integrating academic, admissions, and financial strategies
  • how your child can stand out from the crowd when applying to college
  • the "magic of six" concept that makes it a financial necessity to apply to at least six different colleges
  • why ACT/SAT preparation courses can be more beneficial than applying for scholarships

The 90 minute workshop will start at 6:00 p.m. and is only being offered to Valley Lutheran High School families.  Doors will be open for registration at 5:30 p.m.
The workshop is designed for all high school families with a special emphasis on those with sophomores and juniors.  Students are welcomed, but not required, to attend along with their parents, grandparents, or others that support the student's academic goals.
