Coaches are a Valuable Commodity

I Thessalonians 5:11(ESV)  Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Our coaches are a valuable commodity here at Valley Lutheran High School! Over time, more and more challenges and duties have been piled on our coaches.  Some coaches have experienced expanded "seasons" while expectations from various groups have grown.  Nearly every one of our coaches also has a full time job (on top of coaching), either teaching or in the work force outside of Valley Lutheran.  Nearly every one of our coaches has a family to consider and the time he or she can share with them.  Sometimes it's a very complicated balancing act to manage all of these interests and to do them well to God's glory.

Much of what was said in the previous paragraph is nothing new to those who realize what a coach goes through on a daily basis.  Many have reached out to our coaches and have done as Paul exhorted the Thessalonians to do, which is to "encourage one another and build one another up," so thank you for that!  We are truly blessed here at Valley Lutheran to have the coaches we have.  Our coaches are not perfect by any means, but they do see coaching as an extension of the classroom and an opportunity to share, on a personal level, in this unique ministry with our sons and daughters.  Even though most coaches receive a small stipend, it probably doesn't match the time they invest in their program to make it a positive experience for all involved.  They coach for a higher reason than any financial gain.  How we support them, encourage them, and build them up goes a long way toward saying, "You are valuable to us."  If you already do and say these things, please keep it up.  Remind them often how much we appreciate them.  May we always continue to keep extracurricular activities in their proper perspective as we work toward the greater purpose of building God's kingdom here on earth as well as His heavenly kingdom.

In His service and yours,

Kurt Hofmeister, Athletic Director

Drop Your Net

Part of our theme verse from Romans 12 for this school year encourages us to be "transformed"--to be changed because of what Christ has done in our lives.  So, we ask this question..."What do we need to (or already) change in order to follow Jesus?"

Before answering this question, notice what happened shortly after Jesus began His public ministry: He set about calling men to share in His ministry.  The first to hear the call were four fishermen brothers, Simon, Andrew, James, and John.  It is a remarkable account of "drop what you're doing" and "come with me."  In the book of Mark, we're told that these four "immediately" dropped their nets and followed!  Without hesitation or waffling, they left behind their livelihoods, their father, and the old way of looking at things.  Jesus was calling them to come alongside Him and fish for men from now on.  It's probably safe to say their behaviors, their attitudes, their assumptions, their understanding were all transformed in the days to come.  Their lives would never be the same again.  They were asked to abandon what they probably knew best, which was fishing, and take a walk of faith with Jesus.  These first disciples might not have known what they were getting into...were they ready for the ridicule to come or for the mighty miracles that defied physics or for the awful scene on Good Friday or for the Resurrection? Equipped with the courage of Christ, they set out on a journey into unknown territory.

Christ still calls you and me to "drop our nets."  He asks us to find confidence in what He has already done for us.  The question posed in the introduction requires some personal reflection on our part.  What "nets" are we asked to "drop" all for the sake of knowing Christ?  We may be asked to give up much of the same things as those first disciples.  Being "fishers of men" brings us in line with another command, "Go and make disciple of all nations."  Now is the time to drop whatever "nets" we might be holding on to and boldly engage others to be the next generation of fishers of men.  On this side of heaven, our lives will never be the same again!
