Midterm Grades Now Available

Midterm grades can be accessed by going to www.mystudentdata.com and entering the following information:

School ID: 50

Student ID Number:

The ID number for Freshmen through Juniors is the FULL 8-digit number under the picture on your child's student ID card. The ID number for Seniors is the FULL 10-digit State ID number, not the 8-digit number, located under the picture on your child's student ID card. These numbers can also be found on the student schedule that was given to him/her on the first day of school.  (Note: Seniors are using a number that allows them to transfer transcripts electronically as they apply for colleges). Please call the office or e-mail Nora Krueger at nkrueger@vlhs.com if you cannot locate the numbers.

This system only offers midterm, quarter and semester report cards. We have chosen not to make grade books available on-line for several reasons: In conversation with other educators who have implemented on-line grade books, we have learned that grading grows in importance while planning and teaching lessons is diminished in importance. We want our teachers to provide an excellent lesson each day.

We also heard that students and families can become very reliant on this feature, which has slowed the growth of independent learners. In fact, we know of schools that have eliminated on-line grade books in high schools for this very reason. Our goal is to prepare students to be independent learners in college, a level where parents only are informed of student grades if the students allow them to be!

Finally, we believe that the best solution to class problems is direct communication between teacher, parent and student. If you sense a problem, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers by e-mail, by phone, or with a personal meeting.

Reflections on an Ancient Cathedral

This summer I had the immense privilege of traveling to England with eight amazing Valley students and one awesome Valley parent.  The trip was incredible, and if you asked me about it, I could go on and on for hours.  (Don't worry, I'm not going to do that here.)  We had the pleasure of traveling all over England, and one of my favorite days was spent in the medieval city of York.
While the day itself was the coldest and gloomiest of our entire trip, I will never forget the experience of being in York Minster.  York Minster is a cathedral - an impressive cathedral.  It's the largest of its kind in Northern Europe.  It's the seat of the Arch-Bishop of York, the second-highest seat in the Church of England.  Its architecture is beautiful; its stained glass windows are works of art.
Also, it's old - really, really old.  A church of some kind has been on the site since 627 A.D.  Construction began on the current building in 1230 and was completed in 1472.  As an American, it's pretty amazing to visit a building that's older than your own country. However, that's not why I bring its age up.  I mention it because, as my students and I sat in awed silence inside York Minster, I was struck by the thought that for hundreds of years, people had been worshiping God in this place.  As I sat there with my eyes closed, I couldn't help but feel connected to the body of believers who had come before me - it's an indescribable feeling, so I'm not even going to try to capture it here - just know that it was awesome.
However, as awesome as that experience was for me as a Christian, I couldn't help but wonder what it was like for someone who didn't share our faith.  Was it just another old building, another check on their guide book to-do list?  Upon reflection I was also struck by the juxtaposition of my feeling connected to thousands and thousands of worshipers to the current state of the Christian church in Europe.  While York Minster is still operational, with several services a day, to many people it's just a historical landmark or a tourist attraction.  That both saddens and frightens me.  I don't want that to happen in our home, to our churches.  And the truth is, the task of preventing the same fate happening to our churches belongs, in large part, to you and me.
We are admonished in the book of Hebrews to "not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:25) and also, "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe" (Hebrews 12:28).  I pray that we continue to worship God with "reverence and awe;" I also pray that the Christian Church in Europe can be revitalized so that all who visit York Minster, while certainly being struck by its impressive architecture, age, and size, will first and foremost see it as a place of worship, and will join with the thousands who came before them in worshiping their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
