A LETTER FROM THE AJF BOARD CHAIR
We are at the end of a very successful year for Art Jewelry Forum. We accomplished a huge amount, and now we are looking forward to new challenges in 2014. Next month I will have a full rundown for you.
Did you miss some of the Speakers Tour lectures? Well, soon we will have videos of most of them on the website. The first ones--from the University of Oregon and the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland--are already posted. This is an exciting new dimension for us, and we hope you will take full advantage of this new way of enjoying our events. Your donations helped make this possible. Thanks to you and to all our partners on this project.
Can you believe that Madeline Albright answered questions from our membership? I mean, the real Madeline Albright! You got to ask the questions, and she gave the answers. Thank you Madame Albright!
I was thinking ... if I was trying to choose a gift to give someone for the holidays, I could just wear the book Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective around my neck Lisa Walker style. Then, when I ran into someone who needed the book, like a relative who doesn't understand my passion, I could just take it off and hand it to her or him. This is a good idea for all of us. Order a book for someone in your life who doesn't get your passion for very small objects. Or if it is a special friend, relative, or client, you could give them a membership to
Art Jewelry Forum.
Happy Holidays! Enjoy.
Warmly,
Susan Cummins

EXCLUSIVELY FOR YOU: INTERVIEW BY MEMBERS

Dr. Madeleine Albright, the 64th Secretary of State of the United States and a formidable collector of jewelry, was a rather unique advocate for the strategic and provocative use of pins. She answers questions posed by AJF members.
Sharon Sindell, Los Angeles, California: Was there ever a situation when a piece you wore was a distraction and got in the way of actual diplomatic work?
Dr. Madeleine Albright: There was one instance where my choice of pins got me into trouble. I had traveled with President Clinton to Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin, and among a number of issues I wanted to raise was Russia's feigned ignorance of human rights abuses in Chechnya. CALENDAR ESPECIALLY FOR YOU: MIAMI FAIRS
From December 3 through December 8, there are a slew of art fairs in Miami, Florida. AJF member galleries are participating in two of them. This could very well become the best location to see extraordinary jewelry.
The prestigious fair Design Miami features AJF gallery members Ornamentum and Antonella Villanova plus four others that add a breath of choice for those attending. Design Miami has been sending out press releases about the great jewelry at this year's fair. I would say that this is a wonderful development.
Donna Schneier Fine Arts is at the Red Dot Fair.
If you would like a pass to these shows, get in touch with Stefan Friedemann from Ornamentum for Design Miami or Donna Schneier for the Red Dot Fair right away, so they can place them in "will call" for you.

AUCTIONS
Rago Arts and Auction Center will feature studio jewelers from the late twentieth century in a sale on Sunday, December 8, 2013. Among them are Arthur King, Ed Weiner, Jean Mahie, David Webb, Ross Coppelman, Carolyn Kriegman, Bruce Metcalf, Joseph Wolf, Wendy Ramshaw, Fusager-Demski, and Elizabeth Locke. Check it out.
Wright Auctions has a Margaret De Patta ring in its sale on December 12, 2013.
Past
Sotheby's Contemporary Art Day Auction on November 14 included a number of Alexander Calder pieces from the Makler Collection. For those of you who traveled with us to Philadelphia a few years ago, we visited Hope Makler at her house and saw some of these pieces in person. Have a look at the sale prices.
Los Angeles Modern Auctions sold a Tapio Wikkala and a Pierre Cardin, but not two merry renk brooches, in its sale on October 13, 2013.
