A LETTER FROM THE AJF BOARD CHAIR
Greetings!
Well, it is finally here and can soon be in your hands! It is sleek, it is shiny, and it is brilliant. It is a little awkward and heavy to wear, but then so is some contemporary jewelry. It is so charming, delightful, and filled with delectable information, that really, I could see it becoming your special companion now and into the future. You will wonder how you survived without it. And if you haven't guessed by now, I am talking about the new AJF-sponsored book called Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective. I have read an advanced copy of the whole thing, and it was delicious, and besides that, I feel so much smarter. You, too, can possess this small miracle very soon. Once the book is released, we will send you a special email with a member's discounted price. Look for it.
In order to increase the conversation about issues raised in the book, we have planned a "Speakers Tour." It is our version of a book tour in the US. In the spring, we will invade Europe with events. I hope you will be able to attend one of the lectures or book signings we have planned. Damian Skinner, Ben Lignel, Namita Wiggers, Monica Gaspar, Elyse Zorn Karlin, and Suzanne Ramljak, all contributors to the book, will make appearances at different locations throughout the US in September and October. Below you will find a summary for this tour.
Publishing a book and planning a book tour have been two very big projects for AJF this year. It is cause for celebration, and congratulations to all those who participated in the success of both. I would particularly like to thank Damian Skinner for devoting so much time and energy in producing a fantastic book and Bella Neyman for arranging the very complex "Speakers Tour."
Warmly,
Susan Cummins

MEET THE GALLERIES
| Mike Holmes and Elizabeth Shypertt, photo: Velvet da Vinci |
Velvet da Vinci, located in San Francisco, California, USA, is a gallery for contemporary art jewelry and metalwork and organizes 10 to 12 exhibitions per year. In this interview, Elizabeth Shypertt answers questions posed by Missy Graff. Missy Graff: As the field grows and materials shift, do you see a change in the collector?
Elizabeth Shypertt: Many of our collectors have become more daring over the years and have embraced changes in the nature of contemporary jewelry. But many older collectors are not buying as much as they used to, and this has meant we have reached out to a new audience. I think the whole concept of "Collector" has changed, and many of our best customers would hate to be categorized that way. Read more...
