 | Marine Biology Trip Up Central Coast
|
 | | Morro Bay Mudflats |
Midland's Marine Biology class, taught by Lise and Jeff Goddard, enjoyed an epic field trip up the California Coast on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, October 13-15, culminating at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The class of nine students, mostly seniors, began their field explorations at the Morro Bay mudflats and camped Saturday night at Morro Bay State Park. The class enjoyed a gorgeous drive up the Big Sur Coast on Sunday, stopping to see the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas, and taking a jaunt down the steep slope at Ragged Point, enjoying the beach to themselves and learning how to turn washed-up bull kelp into trumpets. Arriving on the Monterey Peninsula by mid-afternoon, the group experienced one of the richest intertidal spots on the coast - Carmel Point - encountering octopuses, brightly colored nudibranchs, and learning many common algae and invertebrate phyla of our coast. Through the generosity of Sarah Wilgress, the group enjoyed a night at the Wilgress house on 6th Street in Pacific Grove. On Monday, the group strolled down the hill and past Hopkins Marine Station and Cannery Row to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. To see photos, visit the Midland Galleries and find "Marine Biology Trip Up Central Coast" under Academics.

Mike Corman '00 is living in Doha, Qatar with his family. He shares, "I moved to Qatar because I accepted a faculty position as an assistant professor teaching sociology at the University of Calgary, Qatar, faculty of nursing. We have been here for just over two months and things are going well. While challenging at times, it's been a great experience so far learning about such diverse cultures that reside in the region."
