Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Over the past few months, I have heard from dozens of constituents and met with several community associations regarding the proposed improvements to the I-66 corridor outside of the Capital Beltway. I have also met with VDOT staff on numerous occasions. While multi-modal transportation improvements are critical to the Northern Virginia region, they must be sensitive to the livability and sustainability of the surrounding communities. This includes both short-term and long-term impacts.
I have written to Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne about the concerns I have heard from residents and local elected officials. Specifically, it is important that the project minimize its footprint and reduce or eliminate the number of homes that will be taken through eminent domain, that sound walls are replaced concurrent to removal of existing sound walls or as soon as possible after removal, and that VDOT implement strategies to manage spill-over traffic on parallel roads. I also have strong reservations about converting existing HOV-2 lanes to HOV-3 lanes. You can see the entire letter here.
I am pleased to say that we are making progress on several fronts. VDOT has revised plans and reduced the anticipated number of homes subject to demolition from approximately 35 to between 11 and 18 homes. However, additional measures should be taken to reduce this number even further.
Your feedback is important, and VDOT needs to hear your questions and concerns. There are several upcoming opportunities for public input:
- Monday, May 18th, 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the Stone Middle School Cafeteria. This meeting is hosted by Sully Supervisor Michael Frey. The briefing will start at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will address all project components, but focus on I-66/Route 28 interchange improvements. Click here for more details.
Three environmental public hearings will take place at the following times and locations. The hearings will include the latest information on project plans.
VDOT will also brief individual communities. To request a meeting, visit the Transform I-66 website or feel free to contact my office.
It is an honor to serve you in the House of Delegates. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance.
