O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that for the sake of the gospel we may turn from the lure of evil, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord

Lutheran Social Service of Utah Is Disaffiliated from the ELCA Social Ministry Network

Lutheran Social Service of Utah, which has carried on social ministry on behalf of the ELCA for over twenty years, was disaffiliated as a social ministry organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America effective August 14, 2015.

In a letter to the organization, Ms. Josselyn Bennett, Director for Justice and Poverty Ministries for the ELCA, also informed the agency of its termination as a member of Lutheran Services in America which networks the social service ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The agency's affiliate status with Lutheran Disaster Response was also ended.

The termination came after a ninety day probationary period during which the Executive Director and Board of LSS Utah were encouraged to address issues that rendered the agency out of compliance with ELCA policies for social ministry organizations, including a recent reorganization under the name Mosaic Inter-Faith Ministries which was carried out without the required consultation with the agency's corporate members. The ELCA congregations of Utah, which founded LSS Utah under the name, Utah Lutheran Social Ministry Organization, were the organization's corporate members.

Despite disaffiliation and a new identity, the agency has indicated it may continue to do business under the name Lutheran Social Service of Utah. However, this does not change that fact that the agency no longer represents the ELCA, the Rocky Mountain Synod, or the congregations of the Utah Conference.

While we mourn the loss of this agency as part of the largest faith-based social ministry organization in the United States, the RMS Office of the Bishop and Synod Council, together with our colleagues in the Churchwide offices, will be working with the Utah Conference to envision a path forward for carrying out social ministry in Utah on behalf of our whole church.

Worship resource provided for RMS "Church Together" Sunday on October 25

Our "Church Together" Sunday is an invitation for Rocky Mountain Synod congregations to worship in unity with one another, sharing together their Many Voices in One Song. You will use your typical worship experience, sharing words of the provided "Narrative Eucharist" throughout the liturgy, as a replacement for the Sunday sermon. The document includes some suggested hymns.

2015 Leadership Retreat / Theological Conference is September 21-24 at Estes Park

Information about the event is posted online, including the registration link.

Those who have been participating in the Journey of Renewal program will gather one day early for the program closing retreat.

2015 MISSIONAL GATHERINGS
Eleven fall gatherings throughout
the RMS invite your participation

This year's Missional Gatherings in each conference will help us explore our theme for the year, "Many Voices, One Song." The church is made of many voices, and each voice is as distinctive as the person or the community that sings it. The wonder of the project is how the voices all come together to make one song.

But really, the voices don't make the song; the song invites the voices to take up the project of making God's music. That is because the song is God's-God's love song for this world loved so deeply and always unfolding in Jesus' good news. We come together this fall to listen for the song and join our voices to the "Gospel music" God is making in the world.

We have big changes in store for the High School Synod Gathering this November 20-22! If you have been doing the gathering for years or this is your first time, this is going to be a great retreat. "Cornerstone" volunteers needed for youth gatherings

Cornerstone is an important piece of the High School and Middle School Youth Gatherings held each year by the Rocky Mountain Synod. As Cornerstone you will help facilitate the gathering experience from setting up for the weekend, leading a bible study, setting a safe environment for participants or simply being a good listener and friend.

Cornerstone is the foundation for the gathering and their help is greatly appreciated by the planning team and those at the gathering.  If you are interested in being apart of the Cornerstone Team for the Senior High Youth Gathering, November 20-22, please e-mail Eric Plothow at ecplothow@aol.com or Kathryn Seyfarth at Kathryn@SkyRanchColorado.org for the application.

WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER!

Consider a gift to the Better Together Fund

The Scriptures remind us that we are the Body of Christ, woven together for the sake of our witness to God's love and grace. As members of the ELCA we claim the power of being Christ's Church-Better Together.

At our Rocky Mountain Synod Assembly in May the Synod Council announced the Better Together Fund, an opportunity for those passionate about our shared ministry as a synod and as a global church to set aside one dollar a day (or more) for the foundational work we do together.Learn more and give a gift online.

Prices for the weekend are $85/youth ($25 non-refundable deposit), and $60/adult leader.

Register online, or contact Ben Jarvis at ben.jarvis@rainbowtrail.org or 719-276-5233 with any questions.
