"..beset by change, but Spirit-led"

2-candles-sm.jpgFrom the challenge that has arisen to confront the sin of racism, to a new definition of marriage throughout our land, to the questions about climate change, our prayer is that we be "Spirit-led" in our context and conversation.

The text of the hymn "The Church of Christ, in Every Age" names the reality that challenge and change will continually confront society and the church.... and that the church must "keep on rising form the dead."

BISHOP GONIA'S BLOG: RACISM AND GRACE

Bishop Gonia writes, "During the last week I've been pondering the tragic events in Charleston in which a young white man who was raised in an ELCA congregation shot to death nine people gathered for Bible Study and prayer at Mother Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Yesterday I was grateful to see our Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton at the service for Rev. Clementa Pinckney representing our faith community with those who were mourning, as President Obama preached a powerful word about grace...."

PRESIDING BISHOP EATON: ON MARRIAGE

Bishop Eaton writes, "Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have equal access to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this decision is a welcome sign of hope and a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court's decision and remain deeply concerned because of their understanding of Scripture..."

"We have no mission but to serve
in full obedience to our Lord;
to care for all, without reserve,
and spread his liberating word."

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, we praise you that your blessed apostles Peter and Paul glorified you by their martyrdoms. Grant that your church throughout the world may always be instructed by their teaching and example, be knit together in unity by your Spirit, and ever stand firm upon the one foundation who is Jesus Christ our Lord, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GATHERING

Exciting changes for SHYG, November 20-22

sunrise-illustration.jpg We have big changes in store for the High School Synod Gathering this
November 20-22! If you have been doing the gathering for years or this is your first time, this is going to be a great retreat. This year's theme is "The Pursuit." We will be focusing on our individual giftedness and how those gifts fit into and help to forms the greater community of faith.

There are a lot of new surprises this year! Here's what's in store.

  1. The gathering will be held at the Denver Marriot West. It is 2-3 hours closer to our southern and western congregations with no travel difference for those up north.
  2. Added service component. We will be heading out to Denver in congregational groups on Saturday for service in the community.
  3. Fun activities in the hotel and surrounding area!

Some of the tried and true things that we always do will still be the

same!

  1. Small Groups
  2. Large Group
  3. Congregational time
  4. Saturday night Party!

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us November 20-22 in Denver! Cost has not yet been finalized, but budget for between $135-155.

2015 MISSIONAL GATHERINGS

Eleven fall gatherings throughout
the RMS invite your participation

This year's Missional Gatherings in each conference will help us explore our theme for the year, "Many Voices, One Song." The church is made of many voices, and each voice is as distinctive as the person or the community that sings it. The wonder of the project is how the voices all come together to make one song.

But really, the voices don't make the song; the song invites the voices to take up the project of making God's music. That is because the song is God's-God's love song for this world loved so deeply and always unfolding in Jesus' good news. We come together this fall to listen for the song and join our voices to the "Gospel music" God is making in the world.

A registration link will be provided soon.

RMS MENTAL HEALTH TEAM
Nominations sought for new RMS Mental Health Team, as called for at the 2015 RMS Assembly

Nominations (including self-nominations) are being solicited for both clergy and lay members of the new RMS Mental Health Team.  fuzzy-green-plant2.jpg

The 2015 Synod Assembly unanimously approved a resolution creating the Mental Health Team, which is tasked with identifying and providing resources for mental health education and advocacy to congregations and ministries of the Synod. Our hope is to convene the Team yet this summer.

If you and/or someone in your ministry community is passionate about this issue and interested in being part of this Synod Ministry Team, please email Rev. Nelson Bock  with names and contact information.

It is intended that much-if not all-of our meeting will take place by internet in order to save on travel time and money, so that people in outlying parts of the Synod may participate.

STEWARDSHIP OF CREATION

ELCA responds to Popes encyclical on creation

Pope Francis issued a clarion call for the care of God's earth; for humanity to come together to protect the planet that God created, which sustains us and our fellow creatures.

In a statement released by ELCA, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton praised the encyclical, noting parallels to our own social statement "Caring for Creation" and calling for action.

ELCA YOUTH GATHERING

Youth will participate in revitalizing Detroit at youth gathering

Living on a block with an abandoned home or two is common for Detroiters, and the city has precious few resources for dealing with such a widespread problem. Neighborhood blight is a health and safety risk to residents, attracts crime, and depresses property values.

This summer, during the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering, youth will participate in Detroit's neighborhood revitalization efforts by boarding up abandoned properties, making neighborhoods safer and healthier for the residents who remain.

While youth will provide the labor, we are in desperate need of supplies. If you know of a building supply company that could donate 4 X 8 OSB boards, please contact Lisa.Jeffrey@elca.org. You can also donate toward the purchase of supplies by going to www.elca.org/Gathering

Annual Holy Cross Pilgrimage is Saturday, July 11 at Vail

Again this year Mount of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vail, Colorado, will sponsor a pilgrimage hike climbing Notch  Mountain (13,237), in order to view the Mount of the Holy Cross (14,005).  Because of the popularity of this hike and due to U.S. Forest Service regulations which limit the group to no more than 15 persons at a time, reservations are required.

The date is Saturday July 11, 2015. The event will last from approximately 6:30 AM to 4:00 PM.  This is a fairly strenuous hike and requires proper hiking gear for a trek in the back country. If interested, please send an email to Pastor Scott Beebe at skbeebe@vail.net.
