Giving thanks for the life and ministry of Pastor James Drury

In addition to the information shared yesterday, we add these details.

James Hugh Drury was born on January 7, 1948, and grew up throughout the world as a child in an Air Force family.  He was raised as a Southern Baptist, which led to his receiving a BA from California Baptist College in 1970. He earned an MA in Communication Arts from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He used his communication education to work in radio in Texas. He became a member of the Lutheran church after college and attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in 1977.  He was ordained in 1977 and most recently has been serving as pastor of Ascension St. Matthew's in Price, UT.

James was a prolific author, poet, and musician. His books include A Sharpness of Grief, Poems and Stories of a Journey to Healing, and Do Not Dismiss What Is. He was an accomplished guitarist whose most recent band in Price graced worship and secular occasions with spirited offerings.

James is survived by his wife, her daughter Justine and son Forrest and their spouses; James' mother and two sisters and their spouses in Texas, and many grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye.

We surround the people of Ascension St. Matthews in Price, UT with our love and prayers, as well as James' family and friends.

An informal gathering for prayer and holy conversation, with hymn singing, will take place at Ascension St. Matthew's Church on Thursday, April 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Funeral services for Pastor Drury will be conducted by RMSELCA Bishop James Gonia and Episcopal Bishop of Utah, Scott Hayashi, at Ascension St. Matthew's on Thursday, April 16, at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome.
