Lutheran Disaster Response will help those in need from tornadoes

Tornadoes have ripped through Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa and Texas claiming many lives and damaging hundreds of homes. Through Lutheran Disaster Response, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is responding in areas affected by these tornadoes.

Your help is needed to bring hope to our sisters and brothers in need. Lutheran Disaster Response affiliates are already on the ground, assessing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by the tornadoes.

You may give directly to LDR, or your congregation may choose to gather gifts together and send them to the Rocky Mountain Synod offices to show our unity together in sharing with those in need. 100% of your gift goes to help people in need. The "overhead" costs are already covered through the ELCA.

September 8, 2013, is ELCA-wide "God's work. Our hands." Sunday!

September 8, 2013, is "God's work. Our hands." Sunday, an opportunity to celebrate our 25th anniversary as the ELCA! Since we are a church that "rolls up our sleeves and gets to work," join together for a dedicated day of service as 4 million ELCA members and nearly 10,000 congregations. You can order personalized T-shirts to wear that Sunday, as well as bulletin inserts, flyers, and other resources to promote the day. Information and resources.

NEW BLOG FROM BISHOP GONIA

Our RMS "neighborhoods"

"One of my greatest joys is to have the opportunity to spend time visiting Rocky Mountain Synod congregations, to see and experience communities that are deeply rooted and bearing fruit in unique and varied contexts. I recently travelled through Colorado on a "mountain/Western Slopes tour," visiting 7 congregations in Dillon, Vail, Gypsum, Montrose, Austin, and Grand Junction. (I had previously visited Glenwood Springs for a Missional Gathering.) I am hopeful and energized by our faithful leaders and the dedicated church members who make up this expansive "neighborhood" of our Rocky Mountain Synod..."

Syria: Letter to Obama urges diplomacy

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson and four synod bishops have written to President Obama and others in the international community urging them to resolve the Syrian civil war through diplomacy. "Acknowledging the conflict's complexity should not cause us to silence our voices or refrain from acts of compassion," said Hanson. More than 70,000 people have died in the two-year war. More.
