January 22, 2013
Greetings!

Healthy leaders lead
healthy congregations

The ELCA health plan, Portico, pays rostered leaders cash to take an annual online health assessment and take part in a healthy lifestyle!

Taking the annual Health Assessment results in $150 health dollars and leaders may then add points to receive $350 more! Leaders and their spouse, if applicable, can receive $500 dollars EACH for taking the assessment and doing follow up activities.

So, it's time to "get moving!" And when enough take the assessment, RMS gets about $20,000 MORE in support of health and wellness. It's essential!  Take the assessment now!

We want everyone in the RMS to take the assessment by March 1 to get it checked off this list and be assured we reach our goal!

More information.

[Assessment does not apply to those on the retirement health plan.]

Medicaid logo Medicaid to be expanded in NM!!

It is very good news that Gov. Martinez announced on January 9, 2013, that New Mexico will expand our state's Medicaid program to include over 150,000 more people living in poverty.  This opportunity under the federal Affordable Care Act will bring health care coverage to low-income people throughout New Mexico.  The additional federal funds available to our state will mean that jobs will be created as more money is spent in our economy. Please use this link  to thank the governor for making this decision which will mean so much to so many New Mexicans.

Join the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - New Mexico Advocacy Network!

Get Advocacy Updates and Alerts about legislation and activities happening during the upcoming session of the state legislature which begins on January 15.  Advocacy Updates and Alerts bring you information that helps you to be an advocate for our neighbors living in poverty.  You can join the Network by going to the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM

PREPARING FOR LENT

Walking Together with Madagascar Synods

Ashes from Madagascar

Our Madagascar partners have offered us a special gift to use during our Lenten Season - a small packet of ashes made from burned palm fronds from the Betela Seminary.

You are invited to add these ashes to the ashes you might use to prepare your Ash Wednesday observance to help deepen your partnership with sisters and brothers in our companion synods in Madagascar.

Here is a prayer that can be used in worship before the Distribution of Ashes; it can help your congregation to understand the gifts of our partnership:

Lord God, bless this ash we use to mark your promise and our repentance - ash that has come out of fires in Madagascar and fires in America. Encircle this planet with the power of your new life. As we join our prayers with sisters and brothers in Madagascar, help us to be sign and reality of the wondrous new creation you are forging in the fire of love. Burn away all within us that is false and untrue, and help us to emerge at Easter more deeply rooted in discipleship that comes as your gift in the name of Jesus.

The Office of the Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod has a limited number of the packets of ashes for any congregation that would like to use them in their Ash Wednesday Service. Please call 303-777-6700 / 800-525-0462 and allow us to share this gift with you.
