January 8, 2013
Greetings!

Read Bishop Gonia's new blog:
"Take-aways from the Margins"

"Listening to and Engaging the Voices from the Margins" was the theme of the 2013 Bishops' Academy - which was January 2-7 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Academy is an annual opportunity for bishops from the ELCA and the ELCIC (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada) to meet and reflect on topics relevant to the life of the church. This was the first time such a gathering was hosted by the Caribbean Synod. The Academy is a mix of worship, formal lectures, conversations and informal opportunities to meet with colleagues and deepen relationship across our churches...

OUR LIFE TOGETHER
Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and salvation to his people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love, that we may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Violence, Gun Control and Mental Health

What is the ELCA doing about Gun Control?
by Brad Wood, Director, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - Colorado

With the shootings in Aurora and now in Connecticut, many are asking serious questions about violence, gun control and mental health issues and what is the church's response.  While Gun Control is not a policy priority for the ELCA, the ELCA is supportive of efforts within our congregations to discuss the issue and to press for alternatives.  The ELCA has signed on to a coalition called Faiths United Against Gun Violence, and individual members can sign on as well.  Please visit their website. In addition, the ELCA has a message on community violence that might be helpful in framing conversations on the issue.

Because of the direct connection to poverty and hunger, the ELCA does work on issues of funding for mental health and will continue to do so on both a state and federal level.  For example, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - Colorado is supportive of the proposal by Colorado Governor Hickenlooper that invests more funding into mental health services, including a hotline and 24 hour walk-in centers.

For more information, you are invited to contact Brad Wood, Director of Lutheran Advocacy Ministry - Colorado by email or phone (303-777-6700 + 800-525-0462).

New Group for Progressive Lutherans

Imagine belonging to a group of people who meet once a month for discussions of Bible texts, church events, books, theological developments, and more.  Imagine that group becoming a bunch of friends, engaged in refreshed discipleship, theological development, and restful companionship.

Are you a progressive theological thinker and interested in a group like that? All are welcome to attend, although the group might attract mostly rostered leaders.

A suggested meeting time is the second Monday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to noon and possibility lunch together. We can meet at Messiah Community Church, 1750 Colorado Blvd, Denver (80220). The first meeting will be January 14, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. As topics, Wolfgang Stahlberg suggests a discussion on Marcus Borg's book Speaking Christian and an introduction (or re-introduction) to the Enneagram. All are welcome!
