Happy Pride!

Join Us As We Kick-off Pride with Style

San Diego Democrats for Equality's Pride Kick-Off Reception has become a "must be there" event over the years. This year's party, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a chartered Democratic club, will be even more so.

Join us as we kick-off San Diego LGBT Pride with fabulous food, drink (no-host bar), elbow rubbing with officeholders/candidates and camaraderie at the 2015 event on July 16th. Once again, Great Maple has incredible treats planned for us and we expect a host of Democratic officeholders/officials eager to celebrate our anniversary and our Pride together.

We'll be debuting our video greetings from local Democratic officeholders (you'll get a more intimate view at this reception than you will at our booth at Pride) and showing off some of our Parade plans - and we will be honoring our roots while we plan for the future. Come see why we're reminding people that Our Members Make History!

Dems for Equality will be stepping out with Pride this Saturday. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our chartering as a Democratic Club we plan to make a big splash to highlight all the accomplishments that have gotten our community to where it is today. The pictures above represent milestone signs we'll be carrying to remind everyone that San Diego Democrats for Equality has been there for the bad, the good and the spectacular.

We've invited officeholders, other Democratic Clubs and Party officials to march with us in the Pride Parade on Saturday, July 18th. Now, we're asking you! We've got a great story to tell and we need your help telling it. Dust off your walking shoes and be there.

The Club is contingent # 14. We will be one of the first units of the parade following the grand marshals, dignitaries, and parade sponsors. Our setup spot is in the first block of Normal Street (North of University) under the Pride flag. Plan on being there between 9 - 10 AM (parade starts at 11 AM). Wear comfortable shoes, clothes and SUNSCREEN. Wear a hat or cap and a smile and let us know you're coming HERE.

We've also got some surprises for our booth at the Festival this year. In addition to campaign/Party literature and voter registration, we'll have a video screen showing greetings from all our favorite officeholders as well as photo ops with President Obama, FLOTUS Michelle Obama and our endorsed candidate for President, Hillary Clinton. Stop by the booth and see us. You never know who's going to be there.

Celebrate 40 Years of Activism by Joining the Club

Democrats for Equality had a very successful June and we're well on our way to our goal of 400 members to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. Much of the progressive change in San Diego and in our community can be traced directly or indirectly through the work of our members.

We're not finished and we need you to get the job done. If you've let your membership lapse, NOW would be a good time to renew. If you want to be a part of the change, join NOW. Our members make history. Join us.

The Club depends on membership dues to keep the lights on and promote our candidates and issues to the community. A large number of community members depend on our Voters Guide to help them make an intelligent choice when marking their ballots so your membership renewal is critical to ensure those Guides get into those hands. At the risk of sounding like a Public Television pledge drive, if you depend on our endorsements, Voters Guide, newsletters, social media posts and programs, you should be a member!

If your membership has lapsed or if you know your membership is soon to expire, please re-up now. You might also consider upgrading your membership to a higher level.

Dems for Equality would like to welcome Robert Bettinger, Leanne Burgess, Anita Busquets, Daisy Crompton, Ronald Culbertson, Kate Dilligan, Joseph Fink, David Fox, Jill Green, Cheryl Haas, Vanessa Hardy, Ashley Harrington, Margret Hernandez, Barry Klein, Ian Kornfeld, Lindsay Kutzner, Rachel Laing, Ariel Levine, Curtis Page, Martha Page, Avril Prakash, Kimberly Simms, Sue Swan and Mark Zangrando as new members of the Club.

We'd also like to welcome back Maureen Steiner who renewed at the Sustaining level. Thanks to Patrick Alexander, Sapphire Blackwood, Sarah Boot, Derek Casady, Nancy Casady, Jonathan Goetz, Stanley Lewis, Mossie Norris, Congress Member Scott Peters and Michael Simonsen who we welcome back for another year.

NOTE: We had a huge number of new and renewal members in advance of the June 30th endorsement meeting. If you don't see your name above, it will be there within the next few weeks as we get caught up.

You can find out more about the Club's membership levels and benefits online HERE. You can also join/renew with a credit card there. If you would prefer to use a check, send the check, made out to Democrats for Equality to:

PO Box 33050

Note that in order to comply with Federal and State election laws, please include your full address where you are registered to vote and your job title/employer with your check. Telephone number and email address would be nice too!

Like Us, Really Like Us

San Diego Democrats for Equality's Facebook page has been number 1 among County Democratic Clubs for a while now. Even so, we've got quite a few new members so we're putting this out again. Please Like Us! Facebook includes the number of likes on a page as part of their complex algorithm to decide if our posts should be widely distributed or not. If you like us now, more people will see our Voter's Guide in their timeline next year. Twitter has different rules, but the effect is the same. The more people who follow us on Twitter means more people seeing our Tweets.

If you are on Facebook or Twitter and you haven't already liked/followed us, please do it now.

Say No To ALEC

The Clearly Not So Smart-ALEC

Ever wonder how really bad legislation suddenly pops up in State legislatures all around the country? It's not a coincidence when right-wing legislators in multiple States decide to restrict voting rights for active duty military personnel, or vote to privatize State prisons, etc.

There is a shadowy organization made up of tea party Republican legislators, wealthy right-wing contributors and large, multinational corporations who draft "model legislation" for use around the Country to restrict voting rights to the right people; to prevent effective election reform; to stop health care reform; to restrict worker's rights; and a host of other anti-human proposals. The name of this organization is the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC.

ALEC depends on secrecy. It's member corporations and wealthy donors don't want their reputation tarnished by public acknowledgement of their participation. And, God knows, many officeholders/candidates who kiss-up to this group and carry their bills, don't want the public to know who is pulling the strings.

So, Guess What? ALEC is coming to San Diego and we're going public on this subversive organization.

San Diego's Mayor will be on the inside taking his marching orders from ALEC. We're going to be outside making sure the public knows who ALEC is, how ALEC is trying to limited San Diego citizen's rights, and which local politicians are in their (very deep) pockets with anti-LGBT, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-minority and anti-worker "models".
