And, The Endorsement Goes To...

Marathon Meeting Produces Clear Results

Nearly 100 Club members (and many non-members) participated in our first endorsement meeting for 2016. The meeting clocked in at about four hours and it wasn't without controversy, but in the end, candidates were heard from, strategy discussed and in all four races, the Club voted with a super-majority (at least 60%) to endorse.

With much enthusiasm and little surprise, Dems for Equality heard from Councilmember Todd Gloria and then endorsed him without objection for Assembly to fill the 78th District seat. The 78th is currently represented by Speaker Toni Atkins who will be termed out of the Assembly next year.

The closest thing to a horse race for the evening was the decision on whether or not to endorse in the Presidential race. While there was considerable sentiment to not endorse yet, the desire to have our voice heard in a race that is almost always decided before the June CA primary prevailed. Once the Club decided to endorse, the decision was made to endorse FLOTUS/Senator/Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the first ballot with just the 60% vote required.

Even with the extra leap-second, the Club was about 2 1/2 hours in when it took up the 9th San Diego City Council District race. The lively candidate panel featured four candidates - two of which were eligible for endorsement - and delved into a wide range of issues confronting the District and City. The overwhelming choice for endorsement was former Club Vice President Georgette Gomez.

The final race of the evening was the 3rd San Diego City Council District. While both candidates acquitted themselves admirably in their candidate panel, the choice of Club members was never in doubt. The Club endorsed Chris Ward to fill the Council seat currently occupied by our 78th Assembly District endorsed candidate, Todd Gloria.

Prior to getting down to business, the Club celebrated last month's SCOTUS ruling in the only way one celebrates a wedding - with cake. The wonderful cake was baked by Babycakes and donated by Club Treasurer, Craig Roberts. We can only hope our endorsed candidates took a slice home to put under their pillows.

Celebrate 40 Years of Activism by Joining the Club

Democrats for Equality had a very successful June and we're well on our way to our goal of 400 members to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. Much of the progressive change in San Diego and in our community can be traced directly or indirectly through the work of our members.

We're not finished and we need you to get the job done. If you've let your membership lapse, NOW would be a good time to renew. If you want to be a part of the change, join NOW. Our members make history. Join us.

The Club depends on membership dues to keep the lights on and promote our candidates and issues to the community. A large number of community members depend on our Voters Guide to help them make an intelligent choice when marking their ballots so your membership renewal is critical to ensure those Guides get into those hands. At the risk of sounding like a Public Television pledge drive, if you depend on our endorsements, Voters Guide, newsletters, social media posts and programs, you should be a member!

If your membership has lapsed or if you know your membership is soon to expire, please re-up now. You might also consider upgrading your membership to a higher level.

Dems for Equality would like to welcome Trevor Blair, Molly Chase, Sean Clay, Kirstin Cummings, Brian ElliotZohra Fahim, Lynn Gorguze, David Grems, Susan Hartman, Timothy Hanna, Catherine Hill, Jacob James, AnneElise Johnson, Mary Kelly, Suzanne Lawrence, Megan Lim, Michael Mendoza, Xander Norman, Carlen Reis, Yana Reis, Kent Smith, Stephanie Torres, Dallin Young and Rebecca Zipp as new members of the Club.

We'd also like to welcome back Jess Durfee who renewed at the Sponsoring level. Thanks to Justin Brent, Pat Coffey, Sandra Gaudur, Kleon Howe, Robert Lynn, Kate Lyon, Cheli Mohamed, Gordon Myers and Jacqueline Palmer who we welcome back for another year.

NOTE: We had a huge number of new and renewal members in advance of the June 30th endorsement meeting. If you don't see your name above, it will be there within the next few weeks as we get caught up.

You can find out more about the Club's membership levels and benefits online HERE. You can also join/renew with a credit card there. If you would prefer to use a check, send the check, made out to Democrats for Equality to:

Like Us, Really Like Us

San Diego Democrats for Equality's Facebook page has been number 1 among County Democratic Clubs for a while now. Even so, we've got quite a few new members so we're putting this out again. Please Like Us! Facebook includes the number of likes on a page as part of their complex algorithm to decide if our posts should be widely distributed or not. If you like us now, more people will see our Voter's Guide in their timeline next year. Twitter has different rules, but the effect is the same. The more people who follow us on Twitter means more people seeing our Tweets.

If you are on Facebook or Twitter and you haven't already liked/followed us, please do it now.

Pride is Coming

Dems for Equality will be stepping out with Pride next month. As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our chartering as a Democratic Club we want to make a big splash to highlight all the accomplishments that have gotten our community to where it is today.

We've invited officeholders, other Democratic Clubs and Party officials to march with us in the Pride Parade on Saturday, July 18th. Now, we're asking you! We've got a great story to tell and we need your help telling it. Dust off your walking shoes and start training. (It's actually a reasonably short walk and even if you don't normally get started early in the day, the energy from the crowd will give you the push you need).

We've also got some surprises for our booth at the Festival this year. We need help staffing: answering questions, registering voters and just letting the community know we're here to keep the momentum going. If you can help at the reception, march in the parade or taking a shift or two in the booth, Please let us know HERE.

Say No To ALEC
The Clearly Not So Smart-ALEC

Ever wonder how really bad legislation suddenly pops up in State legislatures all around the country? It's not a coincidence when right-wing legislators in multiple States decide to restrict voting rights for active duty military personnel, or vote to privatize State prisons, etc.

There is a shadowy organization made up of tea party Republican legislators, wealthy right-wing contributors and large, multinational corporations who draft "model legislation" for use around the Country to restrict voting rights to the right people; to prevent effective election reform; to stop health care reform; to restrict worker's rights; and a host of other anti-human proposals. The name of this organization is the American Legislative Exchange Council or ALEC.

ALEC depends on secrecy. It's member corporations and wealthy donors don't want their reputation tarnished by public acknowledgement of their participation. And, God knows, many officeholders/candidates who kiss-up to this group and carry their bills, don't want the public to know who is pulling the strings.

So, Guess What? ALEC is coming to San Diego and we're going public on this subversive organization.

San Diego's Mayor will be on the inside taking his marching orders from ALEC. We're going to be outside making sure the public knows who ALEC is, how ALEC is trying to limited San Diego citizen's rights, and which local politicians are in their (very deep) pockets with anti-LGBT, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-minority and anti-worker "models".
