Dems for Equality Meeting

Hearing Both Sides on Proposition 46

This Thursday's (September 25th) meeting will finalize our endorsements for November's Voters Guide.  Among our considerations, we will hear from proponents and opponents to Proposition 46 - the Pack Patient Safety Act.  The proposition, if enacted, will require random drug/alcohol testing of doctors; require doctors to check a State database before prescribing narcotics to new patients to ensure the patient isn't receiving the same narcotics from other doctors; and, raise the cap on "pain and suffering" awards from its current $250,000.

The Club will also consider other State and local propositions for endorsement as well as discuss the logistics of Voters Guide distribution at the monthly meeting. Your input is needed.

Thursday, September 25, 2014

Joyce Beers Uptown Community Center
3900 Vermont St (across from Trader Joe's) in Hillcrest.

6:30 PM for Social Time, Program 7:00 PM

Join the San Diego Democrats for Equality Team

Some of us are old enough to remember the devastation caused by HIV/AIDS.  Dems for Equality saw more than it's fair share with the loss of many leaders and members.

Some of us only remember a world of "In my day..." lectures trying to scare us into safer sex - "sex can kill you", "always use a condom" - and one drug after another to help turn HIV/AIDS into a manageable condition.

Regardless of your age and experience with HIV/AIDS, everyone in our community HAS experienced the effects of HIV/AIDS.  The LGBT community has been, and continues to be one of the hardest hit groups and AIDS Walk is part of our response to stop being victims and keep fighting back.

Dems for Equality will once again be fielding a team in this fight and we need you. Please walk with us and show the world it's time to end this scourge.  You can sign up to walk with Sarah Boot, former and current officers of the Club and others on our team HERE. The registration fee is only $35 - although you can donate more. Even if you can't walk with us, consider donating that $35 (or more) to the walkers.  Donations can also be made HERE.

For the first time, AIDS Walk will be on Saturday - Saturday, September 27th. There is also a new starting point for this year's walk. Meet us at University Ave and Normal Street - at the Pride flag. Get out your walking shoes and make a difference.

Freedom Awards is Coming

Freedom Awards

The Freedom Awards is San Diego Democrats for Equality's premier event to recognize the contributions of our members, others in the LGBT community and our allies.  It's also our largest fundraising event during the year. We're getting down to the business of planning our next Awards and need your help. If you can help make sure the next Freedom Awards is a success, please drop us a line HERE. We'd love to have your expertise, desire to get involved or just your elbow grease. We'd love to have you.

Is it Time to Re-Up?

The Club depends on membership dues to keep the lights on and promote our candidates and issues to the community. A large number of community members depend on our Voters Guide to help them make an intelligent choice when marking their ballots so your membership renewal is critical to ensure those Guides get into those hands next month. If your membership has lapsed or if you know you're membership is soon to expire, please re-up now. You might also consider upgrading your membership to a higher level.

You can find out more about the Club's membership levels and benefits online HERE. You can also renew with a credit card there.  If you would prefer to use a check, send the check, made out to Democrats for Equality to:

Club Elects New Board Member - Seeks One More

At our August meeting, the Club elected Lilian Arreguin to our Board of Directors.  Lilian lives in Oceanside and provides some much needed North Co. perspective to our Club's leadership.  She also brings energy and a willingness to step in and get the stuff done that needs to be done. We hope you will congratulate her on her new office.

According to our By-laws, there is still one more vacancy on the Board.  We'd love to have you on the team as we move into the Club's 40th anniversary year.

If you are interested in election to the Board, contact us HERE.
