Minimum Wage/Paid Sick Leave Once Again Law
San Diego City Council Overrides Mayor's Veto of Ordinance
With a six to two vote (Councilmember Zapf, not voting), the San Diego City Council voted to override Mayor Faulconer's veto of the recently approved minimum wage increase that would also provide five sick days annually for workers.
"This City Council is standing up and demonstrating that we value honest work and fair pay," said Council President Todd Gloria, who drafted the wage increase ordinance. "When 38 percent of this city who work do not earn enough to make ends meet, then something must be done."
Many of the groups behind such disasters as Prop B (increasing City liabilities while taking away City Employee pensions), the defeat of the Barrio Logan Community Plan and many more have already pledged to mount a campaign to delay/defeat the ordinance through referendum. They plan to have their paid signature gathers out in force by mid-week.
San Diego Democrats for Equality will look at the issue and consider steps to defend the ordinance at it's Thursday, August 28th meeting. The Club will also finalize our endorsements for the November General Election Voters Guide and elect up to two new Board members. Social time begins at 6:30 PM and the business meeting starts at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be held at Joyce Beers Uptown Community Center, 3900 Vermont St (across from Trader Joe's) in Hillcrest.
Please plan to be there and make your voice heard.

Club Seeking Two Additional Board Members
Dems for Equality adopted a By-Laws change that called for two "at-large" Board members. Board members must be members in good standing of San Diego Dems for Equality. At-large Board members are expected to attend monthly and specially called Board meetings, as well as manage special projects as requested by the Board.
If you are interested in election to the Board, contact us HERE.

Save The Date
...Sep 7th Is The Day That The DemoBears Have Their Picnic...
Last year's picnic was great and once again we will have our DNC member in charge of the volleyball. Make plans to join us Sunday, September 7th - Noon - 3:00 PM. The location is the Morley Field area of Balboa Park (Upas St at Texas - near the pool). We'll be the ones with the big Dems for Equality banner.
We'll provide the drinks. You bring yourself and a meat (or non-meat protein), salad, fruit, veg or dessert.
It'll be fun, but it'll be more fun with you there.
