Can an eye exam save your life?

As optometrists we are always speaking of the benefits of getting eyes examined regularly. Most people appreciate the importance of regular eye exams in detecting eye disease, but did you know that some conditions we look for can actually be life threatening?

One such condition will be discussed in this article, and can be found with an optomap Retinal exam.

Dr. Carla Bunn was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Science from the University of Calgary in 2009, and her Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science in 2012.

Dr. Bunn is delighted to return to Alberta to practice Optometry after having completed her education and training out of province. Her clinical training began at the University of Waterloo, where she gained experience in the pediatric, binocular vision, ocular disease, primary care, geriatrics and contact lens clinics. In 2011, she received the L.M. Newell Clinical Optometry prize as a result of her overall proficiency within these clinics.

A recent addition to the Mountain View Optometry team, Dr. Bunn believes that her focus on patient care and education will contribute not only to the visual health of her patients, but to their overall well-being. Her focus on preventative medicine and person specific optometric care is reflected in the practice philosophy of Mountain View, and as such she strives to provide eye care specifically tailored to address her patients' individual needs.

A Smart phone app that helps you read - in a pinch!

It's probably happened to you.  Your reading glasses were left in your car or at home, and you're trying to read a menu in a dimly lit restaurant.  So what happens?  You give the menu to your spouse so he or she can read it to you.  How embarrassing.  You are not illiterate, but you may as well be, because you can't see!

For some reason, we never seem to have the same problem with our smart phones.   We NEVER forget those!

Now I am not advocating giving up your reading glasses, as reading for prolonged periods with a magnifier can induce eye strain.  But these apps are just too cool not to share.

iPhone's app is "iCanSee" which essentially turns your Smart phone into a magnifying glass.  The Android version is "Magnificent Magnifier HD" and there are several versions of both available - most are free.

You can adjust the magnification, apply an autofocus feature and yes, even turn on a light to illuminate what you are looking at.

For those of us age 40 and over who wear contact lenses, with or without a multifocal correction, this app can be really helpful in situations where the contact lens reading power is just not strong enough to resolve extremely fine detail or poor lighting.

So now you have a tool in your pocket or purse that can work, in a pinch, to read those stock quotes (not that you really wanted to see those anyway!)

Do classroom computer screens affect vision?

Schools across Canada are implementing computer monitors into the classrooms, as teaching methods adapt to the latest technology. According to a recent study done by our neighbors south of the border, parents have concerns about the extent to which their children use computers.

To what degree do we need to be concerned about the effects of computer viewing on our children's eyes?
