Light Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder - is it safe for your eyes?

Seasonal Affective Disorder ("SAD") is a form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern.  Starting around October, and ending in April or May, it affects an estimated 3% of Canadians.

To help people afflicted with SAD, light therapy is often used.  This involves sitting near a special light source for 0.5 to 2 hours per day, to mimic outdoor light and help enhance mood.  While effective in up to 80% of cases, what are the risks to the eyes?

The use, as well as the sale, of light boxes for SAD therapy is unregulated.

Interested in Bifocal Contact Lenses?  Save the date...

Back by popular demand, we are offering you the opportunity to try multifocal contact lenses at a special event next week - Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 5 - 8 PM (Cochrane location) or Saturday, Dec. 8 from 1 - 4 PM (Crowfoot location).

If you wear contact lenses (or always wanted to) and are having trouble seeing clearly enough to read comfortably, you will want to reserve your spot now.

Often people find they need to give up contact lenses when their eyes start having trouble focusing at close range.  Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia is a disposable contact lens that allows for simultaneous vision at both near and far distances.

For this event only we are reducing our professional fitting fees by 50%.  Space is limited so please call now to reserve your spot.  Previous contact lens wear is not necessary however we do need an updated eye exam (less than a year old) to determine your suitability to wear this lens.

Call 403-286-0888 to reserve your spot for the Crowfoot location (Sat. Dec. 8 from 1-4 PM)

Call 403-851-2020 to reserve your spot for the Cochrane location (Wed. Dec. 5 from 5-8 PM)

Dry Eyes?  There are treatments available

With the onset of winter in Alberta, we see more of our patients coming in with sandy, gritty, burning, and even watery eyes.  Most often these folks are suffering from dry eye syndrome.

The "tear film" is a thin layer of moisture that covers our eyes.  It's quite complex and is comprised of 3 distinct sub layers.  A deficiency in any one of these sub layers can result in dry eyes.  Dry eye symptoms generally increase with age, and can be worsened by exposure to forced air sources (ceiling fans, heating vents), computer use, smoking, contact lens wear or driving extensively.  Certain prescription medications such as diuretics, blood pressure medication, anti-depressants and anti-allergies can also worsen dry eye symptoms.

The treatment of dry eyes has evolved considerably in recent years, and depends on the cause.
