Would you give up an arm or a leg for your eyesight?
How aware are we about eye health issues? A recent study by Bausch and Lomb showed that almost 7 out of 10 people would rather give up a decade of their life, or even lose a limb, than go blind. Yet less than 30% of those same people take the most basic prevention measures to protect their vision.
Bausch and Lomb's study, in conjunction with its partner KRC Research, polled 11,000 consumers in 11 countries about their awareness, attitudes and behaviours surrounding eye and vision health. Clearly, the benefits of having good vision are important to us, as the following key results showed:
· - If forced to choose, people would rather lose their sense of taste (79%), hearing (78%), one of their limbs (68%) or 10 years off their life (67%) instead of their eyesight.
·
- Three-fourths of people would rather have their pay cut in half than have a permanent 50% decline in the quality of their vision.

Eye exam may soon help diagnose Alzheimer's disease
Getting an eye exam may soon be a way to detect diseases such as Alzheimer's at the earliest possible stages, before symptoms develop.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting 40 million people worldwide. It causes a gradual loss of mental ability leading to severe impairment of ability to function.
Changes in the brain that occur in Alzheimer's patients years before they develop symptoms, have been shown to occur in the retina of the eye. The retina (light sensitive tissue that lines the inside of the eye) is closely related to the brain in structure and much easier to examine. Researchers have found changes in the width of blood vessels in the retina in Alzheimer's patients as compared to healthy patients. Another test that is being developed involves the use of eye drops to highlight abnormal cells of the retina.
The early detection of Alzheimer's will accelerate research and development towards new treatment strategies designed to prevent or delay the disease.

Back to School preparation should include an eye exam
During this Back To School season, don't forget to bring your kids in for their annual eye exam to make sure they are well set up for the school year. 80% of learning is visual, and many problems with vision can go undetected in children. As many as one in four school age kids may have an undetected vision problem.
Back to school eye care also applies to your high school and college-age kids - their contact lenses and eyeglasses should be up to date for them to be able to meet the increased visual demands of classroom and computer work.
Children, teens and even young adults are used to the way they see, and may not even notice or complain about a vision problem. Many eye and vision problems can go undetected without an evaluation by an optometrist. Knowing that your son or daughter can see things far away before others actually doesn't tell us very much about how well his or her vision system is operating as a whole under a variety of conditions.
If your child does suffer from vision-related problems, he or she may demonstrate inattention while reading or in class, frequently losing place while on the computer or while reading, rubbing eyes or squinting, or headaches.
Don't forget about eye health - we perform a complete ocular health assessment from front to back at every eye exam. Children 18 and younger should have an optomap Retinal scan done every 2 years. We will also check focusing and binocular vision (the ability for the eyes to work together). Many factors may influence one's visual performance in a school setting.
