Laser Corrective Surgery - would it work for you?  Take this brief quiz

Laser Vision Correction (LVC) has come a long way since the first experimental procedures were done on human eyes many years ago.  "Would laser surgery work for me?" is now one of the most common questions our doctors get asked.  LVC involves surgically altering the shape of the cornea using a laser device.  The cornea is the clear window on the front of the eye that helps to focus light.  Changing the shape of the cornea changes the way light focuses, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for glasses.

For good candidates, our doctors regularly recommend LVC.  The key question is - what defines a good candidate?  Click here to take this 2 minute online test ....

New contact lenses help you see better to read

Having reading difficulties?  Have you always wondered if contact lenses might help?

You may be experiencing presbyopia, an age related condition that results in decreased ability to focus your eyes at close range.

Until the end of July, you can try one of the most recent advances in contact lens technology - the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia - at a special rate of $75.00 *.

Often people find they need to give up contact lenses when the eye starts losing the ability to focus at close range.  Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia is a disposable contact lens that allows for simultaneous vision at both near and far distances.

You must have a recent eye exam (less than a year ago) to qualify.  Book an appointment using our online form or call to set up your fitting.

* Previous contact lens wear not necessary, however a fee of $50.00 will apply to patients who are new to soft contact lenses for insertion/removal instruction.  This product may not be suitable for all patients.

Have you had an optomap Retinal Exam in the past year?

Protecting your vision is the most important element of our Mission Statement at Mountain View Optometry.  That's why we are always one of the first to invest in new technology to help us do just that.

The Optomap® Retinal Exam is the best way of screening for sight threatening conditions, many of which can go completely undetected for years.  Since incorporating the Optomap® into our annual eye exams at Mountain View Optometry almost 4 years ago, we have diagnosed a great number of diseases and risk factors that normally would have been difficult to find.  Recent news shows that optomap images compare favorably with conventional photos taken through dilated pupils when assessing the extent of damage to the retina in patients with diabetes.

The Optomap®, in an instant, captures a digital ultra-wide image of the retina, the tissue that lines the inside of the eye, allowing the doctor to examine it in the exam room.  It was inspired by an inventor whose child lost vision in one eye due to an undiagnosed retinal detachment.  As a result, hundreds of patients worldwide have already benefited from this relatively recent technological advance in eye care - you can read some of their stories here.

And, as mentioned in a previous article, one of our own staff members had a retinal tear that the optomap® helped Dr. Michele diagnose!

Book an appointment now for a comprehensive eye examination including the latest Optomap® imaging technology.  Your eyes are too important to settle for less.

Eye facts and myths

Myth... reading in low light will damage your eyes.  Fact...although reading in a poorly lit environment may cause your eyes to feel tired, there is no evidence that permanent damage occurs under these conditions.

Myth... Children outgrow crossed eyes. Fact... crossed eyes are not normal in children older than 4 months and this condition will not usually disappear on its own. Children who appear to have crossed eyes should have an eye exam as soon as possible. Children are never too young to have their eyes tested if they are experiencing a visual problem. Your optometrist will assist in the correction of any vision or eye coordination problems.

Myth... Wearing glasses tends to weaken the eyes. Fact... Glasses simply move the focus point of your eye to a more optimal position that promotes the clearest vision.  There is no "risk" involved with causing increased dependence on glasses from continued wear.  Often though, our patients learn to prefer the condition of sharp, clear focus and tolerate blur far less once the proper correction is worn, therefore once you start to wear glasses you usually wear them more often with time (also, most vision conditions such as nearsightedness tend to progress naturally over time).
