World Sight Day coming soon
October is here and that means it's time to remember all the people around the world who can't work or attend school due to vision problems. There are over 600 million people who are blind or visually impaired simply because they cannot afford or access an eye exam and a pair of glasses! Each year, Mountain View Optometry supports the efforts of Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) - an organization that builds clinics and establishes systems to meet the need of correctable vision problems worldwide.
This year, Mountain View Optometry is recognizing World Sight Day on Wednesday October 19 (Cochrane location) and Thursday October 20 (Crowfoot location). Dr. Michele and Dr. Wilk will again be donating their professional fees from these days to Optometry Giving Sight. Amber Grove has been hard at work organizing sponsor donations for our annual silent auction. Come on in anytime during the month for your chance to get a great deal on a pair of new glasses. Due to popular request we will again have a Bake Sale on Wednesday and Thursday, with all proceeds going to OGS. And, new this year, you can donate directly to OGS via a link from our Facebook page. We are hoping our staff, doctors and patients will come through again for a successful fundraising month towards Optometry Giving Sight.

Buying glasses online - a good idea?
There have been a few good questions lately about our recommendations on internet eyeglass purchasing. While online purchasing may be attractive for a few reasons (eg. pricing), there are some important things to know before adding those glasses to your online shopping cart and entering your visa number.
1. The Measurements
Prescription eyeglasses are custom made medical devices. Who is taking the necessary measurements, and how accurate are they? Here's a primer on some of the data we look at carefully during your eyewear selection and measurement process:
The pupillary distance, (PD) is the distance between the very centers of each of your pupils. It's impossible to make glasses accurately without this. Depending on the nature of your prescription, we may also need an optical centre height, which is the distance of the centre of your pupils to the bottom rim of the glasses frame ultimately chosen. We also look at the face form tilt, or the curvature of your eyeglass frame as seen from above. Certain prescriptions work well in a higher face form tilt while others need one much lower. The new high-technology digital progressive lenses also require vertex distance (measurement from the back of the lens to the front of your eye) and pantoscopic tilt (amount by which the bottom of your frame tilts inward towards your cheekbones).
Many of us look through our glasses every waking hour. The costs of just one critical measurement being off even slightly can result in vision problems, distortion, eyestrain, headaches and poor visual efficiency.

Told you "can't wear contacts"? Look again...
The majority of the time our doctors achieve success by professionally fitting our patients into one of the many available options of daily, biweekly or monthly disposable contact lenses. Our experience along with the technology available today results in more of our patients who successfully wear contact lenses than ever before. Even bifocal contact lenses and lenses that correct for astigmatism are now available.
Despite this success, quite frequently we hear from our patients who have "hard to fit" eyes - are you one of them? See if any of the following sound familiar:
- Every time you get your eyes checked you go through "about a dozen" types of contact lenses before settling on the ones that cause the LEAST amount of trouble for you
- You constantly are putting up with issues such as dryness, discomfort, or blurry vision while wearing your contacts
- You have been told, flat out, that because of your "unusual eyeballs" there are no contact lenses available (anywhere) that would work for you
If this describes you, take a look at the new Intelliwave custom soft contact lens. This is the first fully customizable soft contact lens, allowing us to fit unusually steep or flat eyes. It's also available for people who have astigmatism. The great thing about the Intelliwave is that it's available in the latest high-tech material, known as "Silicone Hydrogel". This is the most breathable material available in a soft contact lens, letting through up to five times more oxygen than a conventional lens. This, combined with a quarterly replacement schedule, provides even people with very high prescriptions with a healthy contact lens option.
We want you to have the best contact lens wearing experience possible. Now, this option is available to more of our patients than ever before. Ask us about the Intelliwave custom high-oxygen disposable contact lens at your next visit. Request an appointment online for a complete ocular health check and vision examination before renewing your contact lens prescription. |
Halloween Safety Tips from your eye doctors
(By popular demand, we have included our article from last year on Halloween safety):
To be safe, you need to be seen on Halloween night. Some studies have shown that a child's risk of injury from being struck by a car doubles on October 31.
Here are some simple precautions to ensure your kid's Halloween is as safe as it is fun:
- Dress your kids in light-colored costumes or adhere reflective tape to the costume's fabric and accessories. Make sure children and adults are visible to passing cars.
- Eliminate masks from among the costume's accessories. Masks can get in the way of clear vision and can increase the chances of tripping or running into objects. Any costume accessory that could impact peripheral vision is also dangerous when children are crossing roads.
- Take care in keeping make-up away from the eyes. Hypo-allergenic makeup is a safer alternative preventing allergic reactions.
- No trick-or-treater should go in search of treats alone. Children move through darkened neighborhoods more safely if accompanied by an adult.
- Approach only doorsteps that have a porch light lit. Similarly, if you plan to pass out treats, be sure to turn on your light.
- Pedestrians think they are more visible to drivers than they actually are, so remind trick-or-treaters to look both ways before crossing streets and to stay with the group.
Happy Trick or Treating!
