Eat Right for Healthy Sight

Vitamins and minerals

"Antioxidants"

"Bioflavinoids"

"Omega 3"

These are just a few of the healthy-eating "buzz words" that we see in magazines, on TV and in our grocery stores.  How much of this is real, and how much is hype? There is an increasing amount of research on the benefits of vitamins and minerals, and traditional medicine (to which the science of optometry belongs) is fortunately starting to embrace this concept in its treatment and recommendation protocols.

There is strong evidence that supports specific kinds of dietary nutrients in the prevention of the most common cause of blindness in Canada - Age-related macular degeneration.

Glaucoma - the "Silent Thief of Sight"

Vision with glaucoma
Above image is how a person with glaucoma might see

Glaucoma is a common eye disease affecting thousands of Canadians.  It can occur at any age but is more commonly found in those above the age of 50.  It is of particular concern to us at Mountain View Optometry because the most common type - primary open-angle glaucoma - progresses without any symptoms whatsoever.  This is why it's known as the "silent thief of sight".

If you are an adult and have had your eyes checked with us recently, most likely you will have had your eye pressures measured.  This is usually done with a small puff of air on the front of your eye, and is done as part of our extensive computerized pre-testing before you see the doctor.  Your "eye pressure" is just one of the types of tests we do to ensure you do not have glaucoma.  If your eye pressures are too high, glaucoma may result.  We know someone has glaucoma when we start to see damage to their optic nerves inside their eyes.  Since these nerves are responsible for carrying the visual signal from your eyes to your brain, if the nerves are damaged it can result in vision loss.

Our goal at Mountain View Optometry is to catch any risk factors for glaucoma, and if we do find it, to treat it before it causes vision loss.  Read on...

Don't feel like wearing glasses?  Consider Daily Disposable contact lenses

Try them out and enter to win an iPad

Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus

Contact lenses can be an excellent alternative to eyeglasses.  One of the most popular types of contacts we fit at Mountain View Optometry are the daily disposables*.  The reasons these are so successful include the following:

- Convenience of throw-away lenses.  No need to manually clean lenses after a day of wear - simply discard.

- Flexible wearing schedule.  Wear them when appropriate (for up to 12 hours per day for most of our patients).  No need to "count days of wear" before replacing each pair.

- Eye health benefits.  Dailies are the cleanest, most hygienic contact lens option as virtually no significant levels of deposits accumulate on lens surfaces.  Deposits usually contain bacteria and other pathogens which may be harmful to your eyes when exposed to them for prolonged periods.

- Economical pricing.  The cost per year of wearing daily disposables has dropped significantly, putting them within range of many popular biweekly or monthly replacement contact lenses.

And now, at Mountain View Optometry you can enter to win one of two Apple iPad tablet computers with purchase of minimum 6 month's supply of CIBAVision Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus** contact lenses, our most popular brand of daily disposables.  Available in stock in most prescriptions at both our locations.

* may not be suitable for all contact lens wearers

** fitting fee may apply

If you purchased Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus contacts within the past 6 months, we will be happy to enter you in the draw.  Simply email us with this request to mvomail@mvopt.ca.

Almost out of contacts?  Request an appointment online for a complete ocular health check before renewing your prescription.

Finally!  The weather is shaping up.  We have put up with some awful conditions recently and feel we all deserve something better.  So let's celebrate the arrival of warmer weather with some cool new shades.

Remember everything that goes in to a good pair of sunglasses.  First and foremost they should protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.  They should be comfortable and provide you with crisp, clear vision for driving, golfing, cycling or whatever your favorite outdoor activities might be.  Finally, they should make you look and feel fabulous!

We'll announce the event officially on our Facebook page within the next couple of days.  Become a fan if you're not already, and remember - we still have six more pairs of prescription eyeglasses to give away as well*

*We are giving away a complete pair of prescription eyeglasses by random draw to one lucky Facebook fan each time 100 Fans are added, up to 1,000 Fans in total!  We have given away 4 pairs of glasses - still 6 more chances to win!
