Tinted Football visors can be dangerous
 | | football visors protect against eye injury |
With warmer weather sure to be upon us soon and outdoor sports becoming more popular, we often get questions about safety eyewear. One of the more common ones has to do with tinted visors for football helmets. Many of our junior high and high school patients play football, and while we endorse the use of safety visors for this sport, we do not allow or recommend them to be tinted. According to the 2010 - 2011 Canadian Amateur Rule Book for Tackle Football, as quoted on the Football Alberta website:
"All eye shields (visors) must be clear. Coloured or tinted eye shields (visors) are illegal unless medical certification from a registered ophthalmologist is presented".
The Canadian Association of Optometrists also recommends that 'tinted sports visors' not be allowed under any circumstances. A player with potential neck & head injury requires an evaluation of their pupil reflexes to determine the extent of any neurological injury. Such a player would also need to have cervical spine immobilization for precautionary reasons.
To properly evaluate the pupils, medical personnel would need to remove the tinted visor to allow access to the player's pupils. The process of removing the visor poses too great a risk to further injuring the player's cervical spine or brain.
Please let us know if you have any further questions about tinted visors or safety eyewear in general.
