Is customization dead?

If you listen to our critics and look at the industry, product lines are where it is at.

And we have listened. We've developed two popular reconfigurable tables lines over the years and have two conference table and credenza lines currently in the works.

And the reality is we're making more of our product line reconfigurable tables than ever before. One might argue that is because as a custom shop our product lines are very customizable with multiple bases, edges, top materials and, you guessed it, unlimited custom options. Or perhaps it's simply because of their outstanding function.

(You can learn more about them on our website, www.wallgoldfinger.com, under Product Lines.)

But at the same time, we're making some of our most unique custom work in our 45-year history. In the factory at the moment we're writing this are tables shaped like triangles with curved sides, an incredibly elongated curved table (perhaps a trend among itself as we finished another not so long ago), V-shaped tables, ellipses and more.

So for us, the answer is no. Custom has, in fact, never been more custom, and customization never more vibrant.

Our clients may want to order a training table in catalogue fashion, but it's rare that a client looks at a product line and doesn't ask for some sort of customization. At the same time they also want to outfit their executive suite, reception area or boardroom with some of the most technologically advanced, highly engineered furniture ever made. They want cantilevers, lifting desks and lecterns, metal fins and inserts, water falling stone, glass back printed with the company logo, dull finishes, polyester finishes, and tables shaped like guitars and surf boards.

So while we continue with our efforts to fit the industry standard of product line development, the reality of what is new and different in the industry is not the latest product line development you read about in the trade magazines. It is the absolutely stunning custom innovations that designers challenge and wow us with daily, some of which we share with you here but most of which are only ever seen, touched and enjoyed in real life by their designers and owners.
