A camp for generations

As individuals, we all have causes near and dear to us. I thought I would take an opportunity this month to share one of mine. For years, my family has been involved in a camp in the Adirondacks. It's a vacation spot for us and, for three weeks each summer, an outdoor adventure for teens.

It is called Forestcraft Camp and each July it introduces kids to hiking and canoeing adventures in the Adirondack State Park in Saranac Lake, N.Y. Kids are there for the full three weeks. They spend a week hiking various peaks in the park, followed by a one-week canoe trip and then enjoy a week-long backpack trip. In between, campers enjoy swimming, fishing, volleyball, homemade meals, campfires and game and movie nights at the base camp.

It's a camp I attended as a child in the '60s and one that my own kids attended in their teens. For us, it cultivated countless memories, skills and friendships, and a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.

As I was writing this, the camp was once again raising money to support scholarships for campers in need of financial assistance. Amazing campers have been selected to receive scholarships, including several students from from The Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists through a partner organization Discover Outdoors Foundation.

These students have been working hard to keep their grades strong while engaging in weekly outdoor club meetings to learn outdoor skills in preparation for the summer.

I was going to ask that you consider donating to this cause, but in the days since I started drafting this column and our planned publication date of this newsletter, amazingly, the camp has met its fund-raising goal. Perhaps you may still wish to support this worthy cause. Donating to this scholarship drive is a wonderful opportunity to directly enhance the lives of these deserving kids and provide a meaningful experience in the mountains, cultivating a sense of confidence while instilling a love and appreciation for the natural world. Contributions are tax-deductible through Discover Outdoors Foundation. Here's a link to give

Or perhaps you know a youngster who could benefit from this camp in the future. I can personally attest to the lifelong merits of experiencing Forestcraft Camp (Forestcraft Expeditions on Facebook). Maybe next year you can help make this camp a reality for a student either through supporting the scholarship or sharing the name of this life-changing slice of heaven in the Adirondacks with a young person you know.

Sincerely,

John Wall
