Brewing up a great reason to visit Vermont

By most accounts, Vermont has more breweries per capita than any other state. Vermont beers are the subject of books and articles and have craft beer enthusiasts traveling north for a taste.

I have a family member in Massachusetts who visits us in Vermont regularly. Often part of his trip is a run for Alchemist Heady Topper. It's available at the Hunger Mountain Co-op about 40 minutes north in Montpelier on Thursdays beginning at 9 a.m. It sells out within a few hours, sooner around the holidays.

Like it's the latest iPhone or tickets to a One Direction concert, he waits in line with a crowd of others also hoping to get a bit of the golden goodness before it's gone. No, he's not much of a drinker. It's for friends, authors writing about New England breweries and even an auction item for charity events.

Our own John Wall has a similar story. Based on a request from a Boston furniture dealer, John brought a precious four cans of Heady Topper in his work bag on a trip to the city. Along the way one can got punctured and started spraying beer everywhere. John spent his work day smelling like beer and the furniture dealer had to settle for three cans.

That's a lot of effort for beer. Folks go to such great lengths because it's that good. And it is just one of the many beers for which Vermont is renowned.

Here's a showing of some of Vermont's beer makers:

If you're planning a trip to WallGoldfinger or Vermont, and beer is your thing, be sure to try a Vermont brew. And if you're really hankering for Heady Topper, the line forms early. Bring your mittens.
