Saddle Up

Last Friday, when it became obvious to our museum staff that our scheduled exhibition Arte en la Charreria would not be here in time to do a proper setup for today's grand opening, we decided to call on our friends to help us create a show with a similar theme.  What we chose to do was gather saddles from around Southeast New Mexico and West Texas for a quickly created exhibition we are calling Saddle Up.  Our call for assistance went out mostly to the museum members, especially those with close ties to the Lea County Cowboy Hall Fame.  We told them of our dilemma and asked for their assistance.  And, as is the tradition and way of life in the Cowboy Community, our members came through.  The result is a show of almost 80 saddles.  Saddles of all types, sizes and shapes.  Included in the exhibition are trophy saddles (world, regional, and local championships), show saddles, working ranch saddles, English riding saddles, roping saddles, and even the saddle from this year's Lea County Fair and Rodeo Queen.

A public reception will be held Thursday, August 28th for the temporary new exhibit Saddle Up, starting at 7:30pm.   Museum members are invited to come for desserts and an exhibition preview at 6:30. The museum will be free for everyone until the Arte en la Charreria exhibition opens.  When it does, the saddles in Saddle Up will be moved to the Gus Gallery, or Chuckwagon space of the museum, so visitors will get two exhibits for the one visit.

Arte en la Charrera: The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture

Arte en la Charreria: The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture was scheduled to open this evening, August 28, at the Western Heritage Museum.  The scheduled exhibit opening has been delayed because until yesterday the artifacts were stuck at the border, awaiting approval through customs.  These artifacts are for the new exhibit featuring exquisite craftsmanship in leather works, costumes, textiles and silver and iron that illustrate the life of the revered charro horseman.

The Museum staff has been working for more than four months with our vendor, Arts and Artist International, based in Washington, DC, to get the necessary clearances from both the Mexican and U.S. governments for the show to make its final trip to Hobbs.  The exhibition finally cleared customs at 3 p.m. yesterday and arrived in Hobbs at 10 p.m. Wednesday August 27, not even 24 hours before the scheduled opening.  The truck was unloaded at 7 a.m. this morning and tonight's reception for Saddle Up will be held with the Charreria crates in full view.
