Upcoming Exhibits and Events

Sometimes it may seem like there's not much going on at the Museum, but we are always planning for the next exhibit or event which is just around the corner.  Here are a few of the things going on now at the Museum or coming up in the near future.
Andy Warhol:  Legends from the Cochran Collection is, of course, the current exhibit on display.  You will be able to see these works through August 17, 2014 *notice the extended date*.  If you've already seen the exhibit, tell us what you think and we'll put your comment on the Factory wall.  You can find more information here.
We currently have the Classic Film Series:  Great Westerns showing on Sundays at 2pm.  Mary Lyle, Director of Education, presents a wonderful introduction and you get free popcorn.  You can read more in our previous e-newsletter.
It's almost time for the Lea County Fair and Rodeo happening the first week of August.  The Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame will have a booth at the fair where they will be selling raffle tickets for a Curtis Fort bronze and a rifle.  Proceeds go towards scholarships for New Mexico Junior College rodeo students.  Stop by the booth for more information on the raffle and to see what's new with the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.
The next big event is the opening of Arte en la Charreria:  The Artisanship of Mexican Equestrian Culture on August 28, 2014.  The public opening is at 7:30pm.  Would you like to be invited to the private opening?  Become a member!  This exhibit features leather work, costumes, textiles and silver and iron work illustrating the life of these revered horsemen. These objects, many utilitarian in origin, have been transformed into detailed works of art that embody the very identity of the Mexican nation.  Read more about this exhibit here.
While Arte en la Charreria is on display we will host Staked Plains Roundup on September 11 and 12, 2014. Every year about 2,000 second graders and their parents visit the Museum and the New Mexico Junior College campus where they learn about rural life, past and present.  At the end of their day they are treated to performances by Native American dancers and trick roper, Brice Chapman.  Days like this wouldn't be possible without our volunteers.  If you would like to volunteer, please email Mary Lyle at [email protected].
Our final event of the 2014 year is Christmas.  Once again we will be displaying Bonnie Moran's Christmas Village in the South Gallery.  Her display will be open to the public throughout December, but for one night only we will present the sights, sounds, and tastes of Christmas Traditions from Around the World.  This event has become very popular and many people say that it is the kick-off to their holiday season.  Tickets always sell quickly so don't wait.  Also, if you are interested in presenting a country or helping with this even please email Mary Lyle.

"Uptown is for people who have already done something. Downtown is where they're doing something now. I live uptown but I love downtown." ~ Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol: Legends from the Cochran Collection will be on display through August 17, 2014. Click here for more information.
