There has been a lot work going on with the Nature Trail system at the Museum. I would like to THANK the Lea County Master Gardeners: Shirley Cogburn, Brenda Jaeger, Christina Huffman, Tim Richards, and Ava Benge for numerous volunteer hours of service in planting new plants and weed control with the trail beds along with the staff of the NMJC Grounds department. This is a lot work, especially working around all the orange flags that are identifying native re-seeded wildflowers and plants that have been planted into the whole landscape design. Spraying and hoeing the true weeds out are a challenge.

The south side landscape is coming along nicely with new shrubs and trees being planted into this area. Habitats or niche plantings are being developed by David Hooten to help accent and show off the bronze animals featured in the trail settings. David has another large mass planting of the entire nature trail grounds scheduled this month with more animal bronzes being installed also.

Work has begun on the educational side of the Nature Trail system. That will include the Trail Marker signs describing the plants and animals. The Lea County Master Gardeners has a committee assigned that is working on these educational details. Another part of the educational process is creating and duplicating this information in a more detailed form for a computerized kiosk within the museum that the public can access and learn about the plants and animals contained within the Nature Trail's system.

Plans for an addition of a new automatic irrigation system have recently been received by the Grounds Supervisor. The installation is designed to put each Nature Trail landscape area under irrigation. This will not only be a great enhancement, but will help with water wise conservation measures, cost savings, and ensure that the desert natives and adapted plants have adequate moisture for optimal growth in this unique outdoor classroom and exhibit area.
