Sunday Film Series

Join us as we countdown to the end of our current exhibit "Bigger than T-Rex".

Our final dinosaur movie is "Jurassic Park" (1993), Director Steven Spielberg's ground breaking action adventure film combines live action with computer generated special effects.

During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.

Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame Awards Banquet
Each year, in November, the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame hosts an awards banquet where they announce the new inductee(s) into the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.  Awards include:  Bronze Cowboy, Silver Concho, Young Rancher, Working Cowboy, and, new to 2013, Volunteer of the Year.

The banquet is open to members of the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame.  If you're interested in becoming a member, stop on by and talk to any of the staff.

Let's meet last year's winners.

Silver Concho

La Jean Burnett is the Silver Concho Award winner for 2013. La Jean's roots are firmly planted in Lea County. She is the granddaughter of Claude Fort who homesteaded at Midway in 1907 and the daughter of the late Troy and Billie Mae Fort. The family has been involved in ranching in Lea County throughout the years. Claude and Troy Fort were active in civic and community events; both served as county commissioners and were instrumental in fundraising for the Jake McClure Arena in Lovington.

La Jean graduated from Lovington High School in 1956 and attended Texas Tech University from 1956-1959. Shortly after graduation, she married Bobby Burnett and they moved to Lovington where they have been engaged in farming and ranching for 55 years. La Jean and Bobby have two sons and one daughter; they have eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

La Jean served as the Executive Director of the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame for 14 years. She initiated and organized the annual Staked Plains Roundup held on the campus of New Mexico Junior College. She was involved in the planning and construction of the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame facility, which opened in 2005. An active leader and supporter of the Lea County Fair and Rodeo, La Jean served as chairman of the annual queen contest for a number of years. She has also been a board member of the Farm and Ranching Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, New Mexico for six years and is a loyal supporter of 4-H and FFA.
