Larger than Life Characters
Fridays 3:00pm

July 1 The Hustler (1961 /134 min. /NR) Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) is a cocky small-time pool hustler who challenges pool's top dog, Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). After playing Fats for 24 hours straight, Eddie loses his stake and becomes more determined than ever to beat the legendary pool shark. Real-life boxing champ Jake LaMotta plays a bartender. July 8 When We Were Kings (1996 / 88 min. / PG) One of the most hyped sporting events in history, the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman occasioned this Academy Award-winning documentary. Ali's principled refusal to fight in Vietnam had lost him his heavyweight title. At 33, he was trying to get it back, despite 7-to-1 odds against him. As usual, Ali entertainingly trumpets his prowess. He also talks movingly, about his beliefs. The fight scenes are electrifying. July 15 His Girl Friday (1940 / 92 min.) Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) is the Morning Post's star reporter, but she's quit to get married. Conniving editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), her ex-husband, lures her back for "one more story," Russell and Grant have sassy mouths and compelling chemistry, which delightfully drives scenes right around the bend. One of Hollywood's most winning screwball comedies. July 22 Touch of Evil (1958/95 min/PG-13) Orson Welles wrote, directed and acted in this classic film noir studded with renowned actors (Marlene Dietrich, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Joseph Cotten, Akin Tamiroff, and Dennis Weaver) who signed on for small character parts just to work with Welles. The plot involves a drug trafficking scheme that morphs into a character study of a policeman, Captain Hank Quinlan (Welles), who brings a touch of evil to his small border town. Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh also star. July 29 Charade (1963 /113 min./NR) Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) is divorcing her husband when she learns he's been murdered. Three menacing men (Charles Coburn, George Kennedy and Ned Glass) show up at the dead man's funeral to threaten her. They think she has money her husband has stolen from them. Frightened, and with the help of an American (Cary Grant), she tries to hide in Paris. This genre-bender is a thriller, a romance, a comedy, a sendup with spot-on performances by all. Once called "the only Hitchcock movie Hitchcock didn't make." |
