Read for the Win!

Sooo....It's summer! Lots of time to do all the fun things you want to do, and of course, READ! Our Summer Reading theme is Read for the Win and it's all about sports and games, but you can read about whatever you like, just read!

Sign up at your nearest Berkeley Public Library location, or  sign up online. Pick up or print out a game card and complete a variety of listed activities (including reading or listening to a book, or visiting the library.) Fill in all 30 boxes, put your name on the Wall of Fame, and claim your prize!

What are the prizes, you say? Well, you can win a free petite scoop of ice cream at Fenton's and one of the following: All of these prizes are available while supplies last.

Summer Reads
Need a suggestion of what to read? Here are some ideas:

The Penderwicks: a Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits and a Very Interesting Boy
by Jeanne Birdsall
Four girls and their father expect to spend their vacation in a tumble-down cottage, but instead find themselves renting a cottage on a sprawling estate, Arundel. The girls have rollicking summer adventures with the son of the snooty owner of the estate, who is determined to send her son off to military academy, though he'd rather play piano.  Ages 8-12.

For more summer family adventures try:

The Family Fletcher Takes Rock Island
by Dana Allison Levy (also in audiobook). The four Fletcher boys and their two dads set off for a summer vacation, and find that the island's beloved lighthouse has been shut down and is about to be sold off. Can the boys, together with the new girls next door, save the lighthouse while each dealing with their own problems and new endeavors? Ages 8-12.

Pelé, King of Soccer/Pele, el rey del fútbol
by Monica Brown. Young Edson Arantes do Nascimento was so poor he played soccer barefoot. But he loved soccer, and promised his dad that he would win a World Cup for Brazil for him, and then grew up to be the legendary soccer player Pelé, who won not one, not two, but three World Cup tournaments. This picture book biography in Spanish and English, has illustrations that burst with energy and the excitement of the game. Ages 5-8.

Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping
by Peggy Parish
When Amelia Bedelia goes camping with Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, all the confusion you'd expect happens and more as she literally pitches a tent, catches a fish, and rows the boats. If you love Amelia Bedelia, the fun doesn't have to stop there. We have many other Amelia Bedelia titles.
