Poem in Your Pocket Day
Thursday April 21
Don't look now but there's a poem in your pocket! The idea is to share a poem with a friend, someone in your family, or a random acquaintance. The poem can be ancient, modern, or futuristic. A rap, a jingle, a song, a limerick, spoken word, or a haiku. A ballad, a sonnet, rhyming couplets, or free verse. Yours, or written by someone else. The possibilities are endless. Note: often best when shared aloud! On Thursday April 21, look for giveaways at your local branch.

Novels in Verse
The Iliad, Odyssey and Gilgamesh are ancient narratives in verse. The Gold Gate a novel in verse, set in 1980s San Francisco, is an example from the 20th century. The tradition lives on.

Novels-in-verse can really pack a punch. The writers choose each word carefully, styling their verses with laser-like focus. Dealing with a wide range of subjects, they tend to be dramatic and intensely evocative. If you find the poetry format appeals to you, try reading the Queen of novels-in-verse, author Ellen Hopkins  She is popular with teens & young adults.

April 2016
April 1
Walk the Line        (2005/136 min.)
A portrait of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) as a young man-learning his craft, living too large. Although a typical Hollywood biopic in form, it boasts exceptional writing and acting (with both leads doing their own singing). Reese Witherspoon's turn as June Carter, Cash's second wife, won her 8 Best Actress awards, including an Oscar.

April 8
Shine
(1996 /105 min.)
Based on the life of Australian pianist David Helfgott, Shine sketches a deeply moving, often funny picture of a fearful yet rebellious child prodigy as he grows from childhood through adolescence to adulthood, each of the three periods played by a different actor. For his genial but mentally unstable adult Helfgott, Geoffrey Rush won the Oscar for Best Actor.

April 15
This Is Spinal Tap   (1984/82 min./R)
Director Rob Reiner offers up this satirical "mockumentary" (faux documentary, okay?) about a British heavy metal band touring America in the 60's. Mostly ad-libbed by the "band," Spinal Tap is a cult favorite, and Time Out London named it the best comedy film of all time. Stars Reiner & Christopher Guest (as Nigel) with cameos by Billy Crystal & Anjelica Huston.

 April 22
 Crazy Heart
(2012 / 112 min./R)
Former country music star "Bad" Blake (Jeff Bridges) is alcoholic and stuck doing one-night stands in bars when he meets Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhall), a journalist with a 4-year old son. Time to clean himself up, Bad decides, and he tries. Bridges sings and plays (quite well) in this and won the Oscar for Best Actor. T Bone Burnett had a hand in writing the songs.

April 29
Young at Heart
(2007 / 107 min.)
In this delightful documentary, a choir of twenty-two senior citizens (average age 80) takes to the international stage, and to a prison yard, to sing-led by their hip and exacting conductor, a fortyish rocker. Their music is funky, inspiring, jazzy, tongue-in-cheek, scary, and, well, you have to hear these endearing, gutsy people for yourself.
