It's October!
October is when Autumn really arrives, bringing falling leaves, earlier twilights and Halloween. Banned Book Week ends on Saturday, October 2, with a Bike Ride! It is also National Arts & Humanities Month, so we are featuring lots of great arts events. Our free Friday film series, Super Cinema, features documentaries about actresses, a cartoonist, a photographer and a film critic. Speaking of movies, how is your Mandarin? We have a special showing of Eighteen Springs- 半生緣. Our annual Library Staff Art Show is a great opportunity to see how creative the Berkeley Public Library can be. As part of our Science @Central you can learn the basics of scientific illustration. And because October is the month for ghosts and goblins we have chilling and not so scary story times for children, teens and even adults! Be sure to check our other newsletters for more free events for adults, teens and children.

Fridays, 3:00pm
Third floor Community Meeting Room.
October 2 Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song (2001 / 100 min. / NR) Directed by Dietrich's grandson, this highly acclaimed documentary reveals the passionate artist and principled activist beneath Dietrich's glamorous movie actor facade. Even if you don't know her films, you'll want to know her. Don't miss it. October 9 Crumb (1994 / 119 min. / R) Underground cartoonist Robert ("Mr. Natural") Crumb and his family inhabit what ranks as one of the best documentaries ever made. It's Crumb's practice to be transparent about what he thinks. His candor is refreshing, his comics sometimes playfully prurient. October 16 Life Itself (2014 / 120 min. / R) The first film critic to earn a Pulitzer for criticism, Roger Ebert loved films and likened their potential to "life itself" in his autobiography of that same name. See how the man's mind and heart worked to bring people and great movies together. October 23 Carol Channing: Larger Than Life (2012 / 87 min. / PG) A vibrant 90 when this film was shot in 2011, Channing makes it obvious how she long ago took her place among legendary entertainers of the musical theater. It's impossible not to smile a lot watching Channing be Channing--on the stage, on the street. October 30 The Salt of the Earth (2014 /110 min./PG-13) Brazilian photographer and photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado is in his fifth decade of seeking out the world's most troubled places to report on. Wim Wenders' film about him is beautifully shot, awesome in the variety of its images, both moving and hopeful. All shows are FREE!
