Five Great Books

by Cari Best
illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton

A picture book about an elementary school girl who is ordinary in every way, except that she is blind. Zulay doesn't want to be treated differently than anyone else, and gets her chance to prove what she can do when she decides to compete in her school's field day track competition. Information about Zulay's experience of being blind is seamlessly integrated into the story.

Neighborhood Sharks: Hunting with the Great Whites of California's Farallon Islands
by Katherine Roy

For kids who are fascinated with sharks, here's a fascinating piece of information. Great White Sharks live off the Farallon Islands just 30 miles beyond the Golden Gate Bridge. Neighborhood Sharks is packed with facts about great white sharks' anatomy, their hunting, and the scientists who study their role in the ecosystem of the islands and the sea around them. Lush watercolor paintings illustrate this book that recently won the California Library Association's Beatty Award for books that promote an awareness of California and its people.

Brother Hugo and the Bear
by Katy Beebe
illustrated by S.D. Schindler

A humorous story about a bear with a taste for literature. Eating it, that is. When Brother Hugo is tasked with creating a new copy of the lost book by hand, he's sad and overwhelmed, as he knows that "once a bear has a taste of letters, his love of books grows much the more." A picture book for older readers found in our fiction section.

by David A. Adler illustrated by Edward Miller

Everything you always wanted to know about triangles, but didn't know who or what to ask. This non-fiction picture book is a simple yet knowledge-packed introduction to basic geometry. Kids will learn the proper terminology about types of angles, the names of the various triangles, why they are given their various names, and the difference between similar and congruent. Widely useful. For teachers as well as for parents feeding their child's hunger for STEM concepts.

I Don't Want to Be a Frog
by Dev Petty
illustrated by Mike Boldt

A young frog wishes he could be just about any other animal. Even the arguments made by his older frog counterpart are not enough to change his mind. Discovering just what a passing wolf both prefers to eat and doesn't like to eat helps the little frog realize there just may be some good things about being a frog.
