Berkeley Public Library Newsletter
April 2015

Working on the Library's Strategic Plan really emphasizes all the things the library does and can do. We have various projects and initiatives that we want to bring together in harmony.

That's one thing I love about Jazz. There is harmony in the music, but also flexibility to be separate from the melody and then come back to it. It allows emphasis on individual parts. One can appreciate the parts and the whole at the same time.

We are celebrating National Library Week, April 12-18th."The theme for National Library Week is 'Unlimited Possibilities @ your library'," says, Jeff Scott, Director of the Berkeley Public Library, "We serve Berkeley by providing wireless, computer access, technology classes, story times, adult literacy classes, concerts, author talks, books, magazines, videos, music and more--all free!"

This month our theme is Words+Jazz. We have many ongoing programs that focus on Jazz, poetry and performance. Hip Hop for Change @North,  about positive rap,  Sing a Story: Hansel & Gretel @Claremont, with the San Francisco Opera and Poetry & Jazz @Central, a mash-up concert of four sets of notable poets and musicians.

Whether taking self-paced computer classes, stretching in Tiny Tots Story & Play @South, or picking a reference librarian's brain about online research resources--we are here for you. Create something with tools from our Tool Lending Library. Find your opportunities @Berkeley Public Library.

In a way, we create our own music and harmony with the various services we offer. Take time this month and listen in.

Thanks,

Jeff Scott
Director, Library Services

An Afternoon with Mark Cohen, Author of Allan Sherman - Overweight Sensation

Sunday, April 12

3:00 pm -5:00 pm

$100

"Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah!"

In the earlier part of the twentieth century, entertainment was all about assimilation, integration and Americanism. Then came Allan Sherman. In his 1962 comedy album, My Son, The Folk Singer, Sherman took familiar folk songs and substituted hilarious new lyrics with a suburban, Jewish sensibility.

It promises to be an entertaining afternoon, taking place in the 100-year-old Mark Daniels house, one of Berkeley's most dramatic properties and home of L. John Harris, a former BPLF author. The afternoon is punctuated with authentic Jewish and Eastern European food provided by Saul's, one of the Bay Area's top delicatessens.

Pelican Dreams, a Film for Families

Meyer Sound's Pearson Theater

Sunday, April 19

3:00pm 5:00pm

$35

Meet filmmaker Judy Irving for a screening of her documentary, Pelican Dreams. Pelican Dreams features a young brown pelican who mistakenly lands-tired, hungry, and confused-on the roadway of the Golden Gate Bridge, creating a spectacular traffic jam and re-igniting Judy's enduring fascination with these ancient, endangered birds.

Probably best known for The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, Judy Irving is an Emmy-and-Sundance-award-winning filmmaker. Her latest film (rated G) focuses on the California brown pelican, a species known and loved by all. She follows one particular bird nicknamed Gigi as she moves through human hands and back to the wild.

Judy Irving will be on hand at the screening to talk about her lifelong interest in our environment and about the making of this film. Bring the whole family to this captivating film. Treats will be served.
